A Scottish man has been sentenced to life in prison for the horrific murder of a defenseless mother-of-two in a case that has stunned the UK with its sheer brutality. Prosecutors say the killer not only crushed her skull with a hammer-like weapon—but then went shopping with her money before her body was even found.
Lucretia “Keshia” Donaghy, 32, was described by family as a loving daughter and dedicated mother to two young girls. She was found dead in her Elgin apartment on November 16, 2023, following what police called an “exceptionally savage” attack.
According to forensic evidence, Donaghy suffered numerous blows to the head and neck, likely in the double digits, leaving her with catastrophic brain injuries. Her fingers were also broken—injuries consistent with someone trying desperately to shield themselves.
Judge Lord Scott described the killing as “frenzied” and “brutal,” telling the courtroom: “The murder weapon—a claw hammer or something similar—was never found. You got rid of it. You knew exactly what you were doing.”
Owen Grant, 43, was found guilty by a jury in Edinburgh’s High Court and will serve a minimum of 24 years before he can even be considered for parole.
While Grant denied involvement throughout the trial, overwhelming evidence—including injuries consistent with blunt force trauma and witness testimony of an argument followed by screams of “No, no, no!”—led to his conviction.
Authorities believe money and drugs were at the heart of the murder. Grant was reportedly broke, behind on rent, and owed Donaghy cash for cocaine. Just hours after she died, he was allegedly using her bank cards to fund a drug-fueled spending spree.
“You frittered away hundreds of pounds of her money within hours of her death,” the judge stated in his blistering sentencing remarks. “You showed no remorse. You thought only of yourself.”
Donaghy’s mother, Amanda Gow, issued a heartbreaking statement following the sentencing.
“Life without Keshia will never be the same,” Gow said. “She was my only daughter. Her two girls now face a lifetime without their mom. I still can’t believe she’s gone. The way her life was taken haunts me.”
Detective Superintendent Lorna Ferguson, who led the investigation, said the case rocked the local community.
“This was one of the most vicious crimes we’ve dealt with in recent memory,” she said. “Keshia’s family has shown extraordinary strength, and while this verdict can’t bring her back, I hope it offers some measure of justice.”
She added that the case would not have been solved without public help: “The community was essential in piecing this case together.”
Grant’s history of violent behavior was known to authorities. This latest act, experts say, underscores the lethal combination of addiction, desperation, and unchecked rage.
As one law enforcement source put it: “This wasn’t just a murder. It was an execution carried out with cold calculation—and then covered up with a night out on the town.”
Donaghy’s daughters are now in the care of family. Their future, loved ones say, will be shaped by memories of a mother taken too soon—and the brutal legacy of a man who tried to erase her.
