A joyful graduation ceremony turned into a scene of chaos and panic Friday evening when a large tree came crashing down on spectators at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, California — just as students were celebrating the end of their academic journey.
Around 6:54 p.m., with caps mid-air and applause still echoing across the campus football field, the unthinkable happened. A towering tree near the audience area unexpectedly toppled, striking several people who had gathered to watch the commencement ceremony. Witnesses described hearing a sudden cracking sound, followed by screams as branches and debris sent people scrambling.
“I turned to cheer for my daughter, and the next second I saw people diving out of the way,” said Marcus Bell, a father who was seated near the crash site. “It sounded like thunder when it hit.”
According to a statement from Diablo Valley College, approximately 12 people were injured. Two were taken to local hospitals with moderate injuries but were reportedly alert and responsive. Others were treated at the scene, while one individual later sought hospital care independently.
Graduates were not among those hurt, as the class of 2024 was positioned onstage when the tree fell. Still, the celebration was immediately overshadowed by confusion and fear.
Rapid Emergency Response
Fortunately, EMTs and police officers were already on site — a standard part of the college’s large-event safety plan. Additional first responders were on the scene within minutes, weaving through stunned spectators to provide aid. Photos shared by KTVU showed emergency vehicles lining the pathways and large crowds gathering near the uprooted tree, which split across a main walking area on campus.
Jennifer Ortega, spokesperson for the Contra Costa Community College District, confirmed to local media that the ceremony was allowed to conclude after a brief pause. “We were able to finish the graduation and made an announcement for people to stay clear so emergency vehicles could get through,” she said.
Officials have not yet determined why the tree fell, but the college has launched an internal investigation into the incident. Arborists and campus safety teams are expected to assess the condition of other trees across the campus in the coming days.
‘We Deeply Regret This Happened’
“This was meant to be a milestone moment for our graduates and their families,” Diablo Valley College said in an official statement. “We deeply regret that this incident occurred during such an important occasion. The safety of our students, employees, and visitors remains our highest priority.”
The freak accident has sparked broader conversations about event safety and tree maintenance at public institutions. Though California has experienced periods of unusual weather in recent months — including heavy rains followed by intense heat — experts caution that older trees can become dangerous if not regularly inspected.
A Ceremony to Remember — for the Wrong Reasons
“I’ll never forget this night,” said Angela Cortez, whose niece was among the graduates. “Not because of the diploma, but because we were inches from being crushed.”
