Prince Harry’s latest appearance in Britain produced some painfully awkward viral moments after several students appeared less than impressed by the famous visitor — including one pupil who reportedly didn’t even know who he was.
The Duke of Sussex, 42, visited Ninestiles academy in Birmingham on Friday, September 18, to help launch INSPIRE, a new education program connected to the 2027 Invictus Games.
But while official photographs showed Harry smiling, playing sports and speaking with students, clips circulating on social media painted a somewhat less polished picture.
In one video, Harry enthusiastically spoke to a table of students during a STEM lesson while several of the teenagers appeared focused on their work rather than the prince.
One pupil could be heard complaining about the heavy media presence, apparently saying there were “six cameras in my face.”
The clip quickly drew attention online, where critics portrayed the encounter as evidence that Harry was struggling to connect with the young students.

However, the short videos do not show the entirety of Harry’s visit, and there is no evidence the school failed to obtain appropriate permission for filming. Other contemporary coverage shows students interacting with Harry during sporting activities and an assembly.
Student Asks ‘Who Is Prince Harry?’
Harry apparently faced another amusing generational reality check even before entering one classroom.
According to reporting from the visit, an Invictus Games representative told pupils that the Duke of Sussex would soon be joining them.
One student reportedly asked, “Who is Prince Harry?”
Another student quickly supplied the answer: “He’s the King’s son.”
The exchange reportedly drew laughter from the room. (Geo News)
For teenagers at the school, the question may not be particularly surprising. Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from working royal duties in 2020, when many of the students now in secondary school were still young children.
Another Conversation Gets Awkward
A second clip circulating on X shows Harry speaking with two pupils who were working on a prosthetics-related project.
Harry tried to engage a female student about the device, asking whether it would have “a bit of a spring” and mentioning how quickly kangaroos can move.
The student appeared hesitant to respond immediately and looked around the table as Harry continued the conversation.

Social-media critics quickly seized on the footage and claimed the students were deliberately ignoring Harry.
That conclusion is impossible to establish from the short clips alone. The teenagers could have been shy, concentrating on the classroom activity or simply uncomfortable with the large number of cameras surrounding them.
And other portions of Harry’s visit appeared considerably more relaxed.
The visit was organized to launch INSPIRE, a nationwide educational initiative created ahead of the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027.
According to the official Invictus Games organization, the free program gives schools across the U.K. curriculum-linked lessons based around themes including service, recovery, disability and resilience. Harry joined students at Ninestiles for a Year 9 STEM lesson examining prosthetic design and performance.

The carbon-fiber prosthetic visible in some of the viral footage was therefore part of the scheduled lesson rather than a prop specifically brought in for Harry.
Harry also played pickleball with pupils and former Invictus competitors before appearing at an assembly attended by roughly 200 students. (Invictus Games – Birmingham 2027)
The Independent reported that Harry joked with students while playing, praised one pupil after a winning point and later answered questions from the children. (The Independent)
Those interactions provide additional context that is missing from the brief clips being circulated as evidence of a wholesale “snub.”
Harry Reveals Who Inspires Him
During the larger student gathering, Harry was asked who inspired him.
Rather than naming a famous person, he pointed toward members of the Invictus community and spoke about people who suffer setbacks but continue moving forward.

The appearance came one day after Harry attended the inaugural Invictus Spirit Awards in London.
Harry founded the Invictus Games in 2014 as an international sporting competition for wounded, injured and sick service members and veterans.
Birmingham will host the next Games in 2027.
Viral Clips Tell Only Part of the Story
The contrasting footage provides a good example of how a celebrity appearance can look dramatically different depending on which few seconds make their way onto social media.
Official Invictus photographs and mainstream coverage portrayed Harry laughing, playing pickleball and interacting with pupils. People similarly reported that he participated in both sports and the prosthetics lesson while introducing the new education program. (People.com)
The viral clips, meanwhile, captured teenagers who at moments appeared quiet, distracted or uncomfortable — particularly with cameras surrounding them.
One pupil’s apparent complaint about having numerous cameras nearby has generated its own discussion online about filming children during heavily publicized school visits.
Still, there is currently no evidence that anything improper occurred with the filming arrangements.
What can be said with certainty is that Harry’s appearance did not produce wall-to-wall royal excitement from every teenager in the room.
And one student asking who Prince Harry even was may have provided the most memorable moment of the entire visit.
