A 24-year-old woman tragically died after falling from a roller coaster at a popular amusement park in India, and now authorities are investigating what appears to be a fatal case of negligence.
Priyanka Rawat had been enjoying a day out with her fiancé, Nikhil Singh, at Fun N Food Water & Amusement Park in South West Delhi on Wednesday, April 2, when the unthinkable happened. According to The Indian Express and The Independent, the couple had started their visit at the water park before heading over to the amusement rides later in the day.
Rawat and Singh, who had just gotten engaged in February, boarded a roller coaster in the early evening. But as the ride ascended and reached its peak, disaster struck. According to police, a stand supporting the ride gave way, causing Priyanka to plummet about 20 feet.
“During the roller coaster ride, when the swing reached its peak, the stand broke, and Priyanka fell straight down,” a police official told India Today.
The fall resulted in devastating injuries. Rawat was rushed to Manipal Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. A medico-legal case report cited by The Indian Express stated that she suffered multiple injuries to her arms and legs, along with an ENT (ears, nose, and throat) bleed.
Initial reports from The Times of India suggest that a faulty or malfunctioning seat belt may have contributed to the fatal incident. In response, Delhi police have launched an investigation into the amusement park, exploring charges of negligence and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Authorities are still gathering evidence, and no arrests have been reported. PEOPLE reached out to both the amusement park and the local police for comment but has not yet received a response.
Fun N Food Village, one of Delhi’s well-known amusement parks, has faced scrutiny before over safety standards. This latest tragedy is likely to reignite concerns over ride maintenance and oversight, especially as the summer season begins and parks prepare for increased visitor traffic..
