In a fiery clash between personal conviction and woke enforcement, a female fencer has been disqualified after refusing to face off against a biological male at a fencing tournament in Maryland.
The athlete, Stephanie Turner, chose to take a knee in peaceful protest rather than compete against transgender fencer Redmond Sullivan. In response, officials gave her a black card — the harshest penalty in the sport — and promptly removed her from the venue.
“I stood up for fairness,” Turner told Fox News Digital. “I didn’t scream. I didn’t insult anyone. I just took a knee. And they treated me like a criminal.”
USA Fencing required her to sign documentation acknowledging the penalty before she was escorted out of the Cherry Blossom Open. The moment quickly went viral online, catching the attention of tennis legend Martina Navratilova, a long-time advocate for protecting women’s sports.
“This is what happens when female athletes protest!” Navratilova posted on X. “Shame on @USAFencing, shame on you for doing this. How dare you throw women under the gender bulls— bus!”
Navratilova added, “Anyone here still think this is fair???”
Turner, once a registered Democrat, says this moment was part of her political awakening.
“I voted red down the ticket this year,” she said. “It was like waking up to the lies of the mainstream media. Just to watch so many of my friends have this glassy-eyed look while defending this policy — their brains can’t handle the idea that their party may have been wrong, that this isn’t a civil rights movement at all. They’ve been misled.”
Former NCAA Division I fencer Juliana Peceli also backed Turner’s protest.
“As a retired D1 NCAA fencer, I was forced to compete against men who claimed to be women,” she wrote on X. “Female athletes dedicate our lives to our sport, only to have men take our spots, our titles, and our future. Kudos to the women who refuse to accept this injustice.”
USA Fencing responded with a carefully worded statement defending their transgender policy enacted in 2023. The organization claimed the rules were designed to “expand access” and “create inclusive, safe spaces” in fencing.
A spokesperson insisted that Turner’s punishment had nothing to do with her personal stance, saying, “In the case of Stephanie Turner, her disqualification was not related to any personal statement but was merely the direct result of her decision to decline to fence an eligible opponent, which the FIE rules clearly prohibit.”
According to the international rulebook, refusing to fence any qualified participant results in automatic disqualification. But critics argue that hiding behind technicalities only deepens the injustice being done to women across competitive sports.
“The rules may be clear,” one coach told Fox News off the record, “but that doesn’t make them right.”
Turner said she doesn’t regret taking a stand, even if it cost her a medal.
“They say it’s about inclusion,” she said, “but it feels like erasure.”
In a time when women’s voices are being silenced and rules are rewritten to appease fringe activists, Turner’s quiet protest may have just lit a fire in a much larger movement.

I agree with her. I am a 87 year old married woman with 4 children, 4 grandchildren and a great grandson so I am not prejudiced. But a transgender woman who was born a male is much stronger, most of the times taller and that alone, makes the match up not fair. I live in Greece where in many small villages you never see women in the cafe Nio which is Greek for coffee shop where men gather to drink, eat and have conversations and usually play cards in the winter. So
here’s an example of how men still feel about women in many places around the world. Not my Greek husband. Thank God.
Delusional
While I will defend her right to protest, voting Republican down the line is idiotic. Cut of your nose to spite your face.
The USA Fencing Asso. is a pathetic and disgustingly “out of touch with reality” organization! Allowing mentally deranged men, that pretend to be girls, to participate in Women’s Sports and “pretending” men and women are equal on physical strength and endurance levels is completely deranged thinking!
Stephanie Turner was 100% justified and correct to “respect” take a knee and refuse the match. The Fencing Association is guilty of orchestrating unfair practices and changing the rules strictly for political purposes and promoting a ridiculous agenda! I they are now being sued for misrepresentation and unfair practices!
