On Friday, March 21, Gardner’s youngest son, 14-year-old Miller, passed away suddenly while on a family vacation. The heartbreaking news was shared Sunday in a statement issued through the Yankees organization.
“We Are Broken” — Gardner Family Speaks Out
Gardner and his wife Jessica didn’t hold back their grief. In an emotional message, they revealed that multiple family members, including Miller, had fallen ill during their trip. Tragically, Miller never woke up.
“We have so many questions and so few answers at this point,” the couple said. “But we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep. We are broken.”
Miller was the youngest of the Gardners’ two sons. Described as a lively, outdoors-loving teen, he was passionate about football, baseball, golf, hunting, and fishing. His family remembers him as a shining light with an “infectious smile.”
“He lived life to the fullest every single day,” they wrote. “We cannot yet comprehend our life without him.”
From Yankee Stadium to Small-Town South Carolina
Brett Gardner, a gritty fan favorite known for his hustle and leadership, played 14 seasons in pinstripes and was a crucial piece of the 2009 championship team. He retired in 2021 and returned home to South Carolina to spend more time with Jessica and their sons, Hunter and Miller.
Friends say Gardner had fully embraced his role as a hands-on dad, coaching little league and staying involved in his boys’ lives.
“Brett’s a fighter, but this is something no one’s prepared for,” said a longtime Yankees teammate, speaking on condition of anonymity. “We’re all just trying to wrap our heads around it.”

The Yankees released a heartfelt statement shortly after the family’s announcement, calling the news “devastating beyond words.”
