A skydiver has died during a jump in Arizona, marking the fourth parachuting fatality connected to the same facility in just one month.

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies responded to Skydive Arizona in Eloy on Sunday, February 16, following reports of an injured skydiver.

“A 47-year-old was located near the facility,” the sheriff’s office said. “He died at the scene.”

Authorities stated that no foul play is suspected, and the Federal Aviation Administration is involved in the investigation.

Skydive Arizona identified the victim as an experienced skydiver with more than 25,000 jumps. In a statement, the company said he was a respected member of the community.

Witnesses reported that his free fall and parachute deployment were normal, and his equipment was in working order.

“As the skydiver prepared for landing, witnesses reported seeing him initiate an advanced landing maneuver at a low altitude, which did not allow sufficient time to level out for a safe landing,” Skydive Arizona said. “Fatal injuries were sustained during the landing process.”

The company expressed condolences, saying, “The skydiving community is close-knit, and any loss is deeply felt among fellow jumpers.”

The fatality comes just weeks after the death of another skydiver, Shawn Bowen, 46, who suffered a hard landing on February 1. Authorities reported that his parachute did not deploy, resulting in a fatal impact. Skydive Arizona later stated that Bowen was making a solo wingsuit jump using his own equipment when he landed about a mile away from the designated landing area.

Another incident occurred on January 31, when 73-year-old Terry Gardner died after complications during parachute deployment. Gardner was on his third jump of the day with three friends when he encountered issues with his main parachute, resulting in a hard landing. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Just one week before Gardner’s death, 55-year-old Ann Wick of Stillwater, Minnesota, also died following a parachuting mishap at Skydive Arizona. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Skydive Arizona has stated that they are cooperating with local authorities as investigations continue.

While skydiving remains a popular extreme sport, these recent fatalities have raised concerns within the community. As the investigations unfold, many will be looking for answers about what led to these tragedies.
