In a move that could shake up royal watchers and Hollywood alike, Netflix is reportedly in talks to offer Prince Harry and Meghan Markle a brand-new contract centered on a controversial new documentary—just in time for the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s tragic death.

And this time, the spotlight is all on Harry.

Netflix Dangles New Deal as Sussexes’ $100M Contract Nears Expiration

Insiders in Los Angeles claim Netflix is pushing for a solo project featuring Prince Harry as both narrator and co-executive producer of a new series that will revisit the life—and death—of his mother, Princess Diana. If finalized, the documentary would hit the platform in 2027, exactly 30 years after Diana died in a Paris car crash that shocked the world and fueled countless conspiracy theories.

“The idea is to make it Harry’s passion project,” a source close to the talks told us. “He’d be front and center—speaking as a son, a veteran, and someone who has lived through the media’s obsession with Diana.”

The streaming giant’s current $99.5 million contract with the Sussexes is set to expire later this year. But Netflix appears eager to re-up with the couple, despite a mixed track record of public reception.

Rewriting Diana’s Legacy—or Cashing In?

The planned documentary is said to go beyond just the night Diana died. Producers are reportedly pushing to explore how Diana became a global icon—from her groundbreaking charity work to her battles with the British monarchy and media.

But critics aren’t sold.

“This is another attempt to repackage grief as entertainment,” said Angela Levin, a royal biographer and vocal critic of the Sussexes. “If Harry wants to honor his mother, there are more dignified ways than another Netflix show.”

Still, the streaming platform seems unfazed.

“Harry and Meghan are still valuable to us,” Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos told investors last quarter. “We’re exploring meaningful projects with them. The Diana series would be a major milestone.”

Meghan’s Netflix Star Power Still in Question

While Harry preps for what could be a deeply personal new venture, Meghan Markle has continued building her own brand. Her most recent Netflix show, With Love, Meghan—a lifestyle and cooking series—surprised critics by breaking into the platform’s Top 10 in both the U.S. and U.K.

But not everyone was impressed.

The show was widely panned by audiences, leading Sarandos to issue a rare public defense. “We’re a passive partner in Meghan’s company, and it’s part of our discovery model,” he explained.

Translation: we’re still figuring out if this is worth it.

Royal Expert: Sussexes Desperately Need This Deal

According to royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, the Netflix renewal may be the couple’s only real shot at staying in the spotlight.

“They have to get Netflix and they have to keep them on board,” he told GB News. “It’s clear something new is coming, but I’d be shocked if it’s anything like the original mega-deal.”

Fitzwilliams added, “This is a make-or-break moment. If Netflix walks, what’s left for them?”

A Strategic Pivot—or a Royal Cash Grab?

With their Spotify deal dead and their star power dimming in some circles, Harry and Meghan are now betting big on Diana’s memory to reignite their relevance—and possibly secure another major payday.

Whether the public buys it is another story.

And as 2027 approaches, one thing is clear: the battle over Princess Diana’s legacy is far from over.
