Elon Musk has once again made headlines—not just for his technological ambitions, but for the name of his 14th known child: Seldon Lycurgus. The name choice hints at Musk’s ideological leanings, with ties to both science fiction and the austere discipline of ancient Sparta.

Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis, the mother of the child, announced the birth on X, stating, “In light of beautiful Arcadia’s birthday, we felt it was better to also just share directly about our wonderful and incredible son Seldon Lycurgus. Built like a juggernaut, with a solid heart of gold. Love him so much.” Musk subtly confirmed the news by responding with a heart emoji.

A Name Steeped in History and Strategy

The name “Seldon” appears to reference Hari Seldon, a character from Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series. Seldon is a mathematician who pioneers “psychohistory,” a field that predicts and shapes the future of civilization. The Foundation series, which Apple TV+ adapted into a drama, explores themes of technological progress, societal control, and the role of an elite few in shaping history—topics that seem to align with Musk’s vision for humanity.

The middle name, “Lycurgus,” holds even more weight. Lycurgus was the legendary lawgiver of Sparta, the ancient Greek city-state known for its harsh, disciplined, and militarized society. Under his supposed leadership, Sparta rejected luxury, prioritized martial excellence, and conditioned its citizens for hardship and duty.

Musk’s Spartan Philosophy and the Future of Government

Musk, now head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Donald Trump’s second term, has been vocal about the need to cut government waste and streamline bureaucracy. Observers see the name choice as a reflection of Musk’s governance style—favoring efficiency, self-reliance, and rigid discipline over bureaucratic sprawl.

According to historian Kaylynne Hoeppner, whose book Lycurgus of Sparta: The Life, Vision, and Legacy of the Legendary Lawgiver was released last year, Lycurgus reshaped Sparta by eliminating wealth disparities, enforcing military training from childhood, and mandating frugality as a virtue.

“He transformed Sparta into a warrior society where every citizen was expected to sacrifice for the greater good,” Hoeppner explained. “Private wealth was devalued, and obedience to the state became paramount.”

This aligns with Musk’s frequent calls for a leaner, more disciplined government structure. During his first cabinet meeting in Trump’s second term, Musk was seen wearing a shirt labeled “Tech Support,” a nod to his hands-on approach to government reform.

A Controversial Legacy?

Lycurgus’ historical legacy, however, is not without controversy. Some scholars argue that his reforms laid the foundation for eugenics-based thinking, emphasizing controlled breeding and the selection of “stronger” citizens to fortify the state.

Greek historian Xenophon, in The Constitution of the Lacedaemonians, wrote that Lycurgus viewed motherhood as a woman’s highest duty. “He insisted on physical training for the female no less than for the male sex: moreover, he instituted races and trials of strength for women competitors as for men, believing that if both parents are strong, they produce more vigorous offspring.”

Musk has similarly voiced concerns about declining birth rates, arguing that society must prioritize reproduction or risk collapse. His mother, Maye Musk, has echoed these sentiments, calling for a cultural shift that values large families despite financial hardships.

What’s Next?

While some see Musk’s choice of “Lycurgus” as a sign of admiration for a strong, efficient society, others point to its historical misuse in totalitarian regimes. Lycurgus was notably invoked in Nazi propaganda as an idealized model of state-controlled society and disciplined breeding.

Whether this name choice is merely an intellectual homage or a deeper reflection of Musk’s ambitions for the future of America remains to be seen. What is clear is that Musk continues to shape public discourse—not just through his policies, but through the very names he gives his children.

  1. What conspiracy theory? That Elon is a savant moron? This is a fact
Elon thinks that because he was savvy and lucky enough to invest with the right people and in the right industry at the right time , now he think he is the New God out to make the world in his own image?
Regarding Sparta, it was a failure. The people were made miserable by design and the state depended on the slavery of other greeks to survive. The Spartans were morons and no more than a footnote in history. Athens is what left us the heritage of the government of the people for the people…it is messy and requires people to think and get involved, but it is the best way so far…Also they gave us mathematics, philosophy ,science and so much more
