Lester Holt has shocked the nation. After a decade at the helm of NBC Nightly News, he is stepping down. His final broadcast marks the end of an era.
Holt began his journey as a 20-year-old radio reporter in San Francisco. “I could never have imagined my career path would unfold in the way it has,” he once wrote. “What an amazing ride.” His steady reporting earned him the trust of millions.
Holt will not leave NBC entirely. He will take on a full-time role with Dateline, where he has anchored for nearly 15 years. This move comes as a surprise to many loyal viewers.
A veteran colleague said, “Lester has always stood for truth and integrity. His work set a high standard in journalism.” Another noted, “His calm demeanor in the storm of breaking news has comforted a generation.”
NBC has yet to announce who will replace him. The departure leaves a gap in a trusted institution. Holt’s legacy of hard-hitting, honest reporting will be hard to match.
This is more than a retirement from one show—it’s the closing of a significant chapter in American journalism. The nation now wonders what new paths the icon will forge next.

I hate this – I love Lester Holt and watch all his news programs and other things. Jeez I am sure going to miss him. Such a nice and classy person.
I’ll miss him! I’ve been watching the nightly news for many, many years.
I am not a fan of nightly network news but Holt’s broadcast was more in balance than CBS or ABC. His broadcast was the only one of the Big 3 networks that my wife and I could tolerate.
