Andrea Mitchell, an enduring presence on MSNBC, is stepping down from her long-running daily program, Andrea Mitchell Reports.
The 77-year-old anchor shared her plans on Tuesday, October 29, noting that she’ll leave “sometime after” the presidential inauguration in January 2025. This departure marks the end of her 16-year tenure at the noon anchor desk, though she will remain a mainstay at NBC News as Chief Foreign Affairs and Chief Washington Correspondent.
In her final remarks, Mitchell explained her decision. “After 16 years of being in the anchor chair every day, I want time to do more of what I love the most: more connecting, listening, and reporting in the field,” she shared. Her focus will remain on pressing global issues and the deepening political divisions at home.
“Whoever is elected next week will face monumental challenges. I intend to cover it all but from a different vantage point,” she added.
Andrea Mitchell has decided to shift from her daily anchoring duties on MSNBC to a broader role at NBC News. The legendary and trailblazing reporter remains Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent and Chief Washington Correspondent.

A veteran journalist, Mitchell joined NBC News in 1978. Her show, Andrea Mitchell Reports, which has aired since 2008, is the longest-running daytime program on MSNBC, known for Mitchell’s signature hard-hitting interviews and insider perspectives.
For years, she has been a rare, consistent voice in Washington—one that has brought viewers into the heart of political power, through primaries, debates, elections, and breaking news around the world.
Mitchell assured viewers that she isn’t leaving entirely. “You’ll still see me on MSNBC and NBC platforms, and maybe even in your hometowns,” she remarked. Her departure signals a significant change for MSNBC, where Mitchell’s influence helped shape the network’s political coverage.
NBC and MSNBC have yet to announce a replacement for Andrea Mitchell Reports, but the program’s departure leaves a void in the lineup. Mitchell’s move follows a year of changes among top anchors. CBS’s Norah O’Donnell and NBC’s Hoda Kotb both announced they would step back from their shows, sparking varied responses from fans and colleagues alike.
Mitchell remains optimistic about the future. “After the inaugural, I’ll share more about these exciting new plans,” she said. “But through it all, I’m committed to bringing you the major newsmakers shaping our country and the world.”
