Alec and Hilaria Baldwin are no strangers to controversy, but their new TLC reality series, The Baldwins, proves they aren’t shying away from it.
In an unexpected turn, the couple has chosen to tackle their scandals head-on—family chaos and all—in what can only be described as a blend of PR damage control and surprisingly candid self-examination.
A Family in the Spotlight
The series follows Alec and Hilaria as they navigate life with seven children, a bustling household, and a media firestorm that never seems to die down. At first glance, it might remind audiences of Jon & Kate Plus 8—if Jon had been an Oscar-nominated actor facing legal battles and Kate had been accused of fabricating her cultural identity. The result? A reality show that is as compelling as it is confounding.
In the pilot episode, titled “Along Came Hilaria,” the couple delves into their relationship’s origins. Hilaria was a 27-year-old yoga instructor when she met Alec, who was 53. Tabloids immediately painted her as a gold digger, a charge she acknowledges but refutes.
“I haven’t Googled myself in years,” Hilaria admits in the episode. “But I know what people say. And honestly? If I were reading about someone else, I’d probably wonder the same thing.”
Alec, never one to mince words, interjects: “She had her own life. She was happy. And then I dragged her into this filthy world I live in.”
The Rust Tragedy
Of course, the show wouldn’t be complete without addressing the most serious controversy: the 2021 accidental shooting on the set of Rust that resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. At the time of filming, Alec was facing involuntary manslaughter charges, which could have resulted in an 18-month prison sentence.
The documentary-style footage captures the moment Alec learned of Hutchins’ death. Grainy security footage shows him gasping, covering his mouth, and whispering, “No.”
Hilaria, tearful, tells the camera, “Watching Alec’s pain… it doesn’t compare to Halyna’s loss, to her son growing up without a mother. But it’s agony nonetheless.”
Alec, in a rare moment of vulnerability, admits, “I wake up every morning thinking, ‘Why am I still here? Why couldn’t it have been me?’”
Hilaria reveals for the first time that Alec was diagnosed with PTSD following the incident. “Anyone close to Alec has seen the decline in his mental health,” she says. “He questions everything, even his own existence.”
The Spanish Scandal
Then there’s the issue that had the internet ablaze in 2020: Hilaria’s alleged misrepresentation of her Spanish heritage.
The series doesn’t dodge the subject. Headlines flash across the screen: The Atlantic called her an “identity hoaxer.” Social media users circulated videos of her slipping in and out of a Spanish accent, forgetting English words, despite her upbringing in Boston.
In a confessional, Alec jokingly tells Hilaria, “Slow down, sweetheart. You’re speaking English with a Spanish cadence again. I can’t keep up.”
Hilaria, however, is firm in her response. “I’m raising my children bilingual. My family lives in Spain. When I mix Spanish and English, it doesn’t make me a fraud—it makes me normal.”
She admits the controversy hurt deeply. “I’d be lying if I said it didn’t put me in dark places.”
A PR Stunt or Something More?
There’s no doubt The Baldwins is an attempt to reshape their narrative, but its effectiveness is another question entirely. The show offers a voyeuristic look into their life, and whether you see it as genuine self-reflection or a carefully orchestrated spin campaign, it’s undeniably watchable.
Is it noble? Maybe not. Is it manipulative? Almost certainly. But is it compelling? Absolutely.
If this is just the first episode, one can only imagine what’s still to come.

Alec and “Hilarious” can’t take a hint and still think they are somehow relevant. I thought they they were were headed to Spain or some other Socialist country to spend the last days!
Just what we need, more excrement on tv.
