The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum reopened its doors Wednesday, just one day after an abrupt and controversial closure that sparked public outcry from members of the Kennedy family.
The shutdown, which was reportedly linked to federal budget cuts and staffing reductions, ignited a political firestorm, drawing harsh criticism from both Massachusetts officials and JFK’s descendants.
A Sudden Closure, A Swift Reversal
On Tuesday, visitors at the Boston-based library were unexpectedly ushered out, with signs posted at the entrance citing an executive order signed by President Donald Trump.
According to reports, five key staff members were dismissed as part of broader government-wide cost-cutting measures, leaving the facility unable to process admissions or manage guest services. A library spokesperson confirmed that the decision to close was made internally after it became clear that the museum could not operate without critical personnel.
“The director of the library had no choice,” an anonymous employee told The Washington Post. “Without ticketing staff and proper security, keeping the museum open just wasn’t feasible. The safety of visitors is always our top priority.”
However, within 24 hours, the library reversed course. The National Archives, which oversees the facility, issued a statement declaring that operations would resume as normal on Wednesday. Mentions of the closure disappeared from the library’s website, and social media posts addressing the shutdown were quietly deleted.
Kennedy Family Speaks Out
The decision to shutter the museum drew immediate backlash from the Kennedy family, particularly from Jack Schlossberg, the only grandson of President John F. Kennedy. Schlossberg, known for his outspoken political views, took to social media in a fiery video message criticizing both the closure and its potential motivations.
“Hey, it’s Jack. I’m OK, but our country is not,” Schlossberg said in a video posted to X. “This isn’t about efficiency. This is about rewriting history and gutting our institutions.”
His post, which included a direct attack on billionaire Elon Musk—whose influence over government policies has come under scrutiny—quickly went viral. Schlossberg later told The Washington Post: “This is a direct attack on our past to rewrite a new future. Cutting funding to public institutions like this library is a deliberate attempt to limit access to history.”
Former Congressman Joe Kennedy III, JFK’s grandnephew, echoed Schlossberg’s concerns. “Closing government libraries to fund tax breaks for the wealthy is reckless and shortsighted,” Kennedy said. “Public institutions like the JFK Library are not just buildings. They are the guardians of our history.”
Political and Public Reactions
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey did not hold back in her response. “This thoughtless crusade to dismantle public institutions in the name of ‘efficiency’ is nothing more than political theater,” she stated. “The American people deserve better.”
The sudden reopening has raised further questions about the decision-making process behind the closure. While the National Archives has remained tight-lipped, speculation is mounting over whether pressure from the Kennedy family and public backlash played a role in the swift reversal.
Meanwhile, this incident follows Trump’s recent decision to dissolve the bipartisan board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, replacing it with his own appointees. Critics see these moves as part of a broader effort to reshape federal cultural institutions.
With the library’s doors open once again, the debate over government priorities, historical preservation, and political influence rages on. For now, visitors can return—but the controversy is far from over.
