Tensions boiled over at a packed town hall meeting Thursday night as Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA) faced an outraged crowd demanding answers on controversial federal budget cuts and concerns over executive overreach.

McCormick, a staunch conservative and former Marine, recently made headlines by suggesting that students should work for their school lunches.

His remarks, coupled with his vocal support for President Donald Trump’s newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), have drawn sharp criticism from many constituents in his suburban Atlanta district.

Overflow Crowds, Overflowing Frustration

The town hall, held at Roswell City Council chambers, quickly became a flashpoint for public discontent. Lines wrapped around the building as hundreds of frustrated residents gathered, many holding signs condemning both McCormick’s budget-cutting agenda and what they see as growing authoritarian tendencies in the White House.

Local reporter Greg Bluestein of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution described the atmosphere as “volatile,” with audience members frequently interrupting McCormick with jeers and demands for straight answers.

“We’re pissed,” one attendee shouted, echoing the crowd’s frustration. Another yelled, “Don’t bend over!” as McCormick attempted to explain his positions.

Budget Cuts and ‘King Trump’

Many in the audience were particularly angered by sweeping budget reductions spearheaded by DOGE, an agency overseen by tech mogul Elon Musk. The cuts, which have slashed funding for public services, including school meal programs and infrastructure projects, have been met with widespread backlash.

“Congressman, you’ve voted for these cuts, but how does starving kids and gutting our public safety help the people of Georgia?” one constituent demanded.

McCormick, maintaining his composure, replied, “We need fiscal responsibility. We cannot continue spending money we don’t have.” His response was met with a wave of boos.

But it was Trump’s recent accumulation of executive power that seemed to strike the most sensitive nerve.

“Our great republic was never meant to be ruled by a dictator or a king,” a woman declared to thunderous applause. “So you can imagine my shock and pure horror when I woke up to find that our president had given himself unprecedented executive powers.”

McCormick Pushes Back

McCormick attempted to quell concerns, pointing to the REINS Act, a bill designed to limit executive authority. “I don’t want to see any president—Republican or Democrat—holding too much power,” he insisted.

But the crowd wasn’t satisfied.

“You’re dodging the question!” a man shouted. Others demanded McCormick explicitly state whether he believed Trump had overstepped his authority.

“I answered it directly,” McCormick shot back. “I don’t want any president—Republican or Democrat—to have unchecked power.”

The audience, unconvinced, erupted into chants of “Shame! Shame!”

A Republican Divide

This town hall underscored growing divisions within the GOP. While McCormick has largely aligned himself with Trump’s agenda, the heated backlash from his own constituents suggests that not all Republicans are on board with the party’s direction.

As the event wound down, one man’s voice cut through the chaos: “We want to work with someone better!” The crowd roared in agreement.

McCormick left the stage, visibly frustrated. His staff declined to comment.

As the 2026 election cycle looms, one thing is clear: McCormick and his fellow Republicans will need to navigate an increasingly fractured conservative base—one that’s no longer willing to sit quietly on the sidelines.
