Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old accused of assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Dec. 4, 2024, has broken his silence, releasing his first public statement through his legal team alongside the launch of a website dedicated to his defense.

Mangione, who has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since his arrest, expressed gratitude to supporters in a message released Friday.

“I am overwhelmed by—and grateful for—everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support. This support has transcended political, racial, and even class divisions, as mail has flooded MDC from across the country and around the globe,” Mangione wrote. “While I cannot respond to every letter, please know that I read each one. Thank you again to everyone who has reached out. I look forward to hearing more in the future.”

The message, released via a newly launched website, LuigiMangioneInfo.com, serves as a central hub for updates on the case, legal filings, and a public fundraiser supporting his defense.

Website Aims to Counter “Misinformation”

Mangione’s legal team, led by prominent defense attorney Robert F. Delgado, confirmed the authenticity of both the statement and the website in a response to Rolling Stone. “We created this site to ensure that factual, verified information about Luigi’s case is accessible to the public,” Delgado said. “There has been a tremendous amount of speculation, and we want to correct the record.”

The site features an FAQ section, details about Mangione’s legal team, and a direct donation link for supporters. Since its launch, the fundraiser has surpassed $400,000, with thousands of small-dollar donations and a handful of high-profile contributions.

Public Reaction: Folk Hero or Criminal?

Mangione’s arrest has ignited widespread debate, particularly among younger Americans frustrated with the country’s healthcare system. A January 2025 poll by Quinnipiac University found that 41% of voters under 30 deemed the assassination of Thompson “acceptable,” compared to 17% of the general public.

Supporters argue that the U.S. healthcare system, characterized by rising costs and denied claims, contributed to the outrage behind Mangione’s actions. Many donors have voiced concerns about his potential sentence, with some fearing the death penalty. “This isn’t about just one man—this is about decades of unchecked corporate greed,” wrote one anonymous donor.

Adding to the fervor, a cryptocurrency group launched a token in Mangione’s name, $LUIGI on Solana, donating the single largest amount—$6,286. The group’s statement reads: “We are committed to taking action and fixing our healthcare system. We also want to see a fair trial. It takes real courage to stand against corporate corruption.”

Legal Battle Ahead

Mangione faces 11 charges, including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism. Legal experts say the case could become a landmark trial, with prosecutors expected to argue that the murder was politically motivated. His defense team is likely to challenge those claims, framing him instead as a man driven by desperation in a broken system.

Mangione’s next court appearance is set for Feb. 21, 2025, where his attorneys are expected to file additional pretrial motions. As the legal proceedings unfold, public interest in the case—and the deeper issues it represents—continues to grow.
