Luigi Mangione, a murder suspect with an Ivy League pedigree, became the center of attention during his extradition hearing on Thursday. Clean-shaven, neatly coiffed, and with trimmed eyebrows, the 26-year-old bore little resemblance to his disheveled appearance just days earlier.
The transformation unfolded in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, where Mangione appeared subdued as he waived extradition. He is charged with the high-profile killing of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, in Manhattan last week. Mangione’s initial arrest—at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania—captured public interest, fueled by his wild-eyed look and several days of stubble.
Protesters and supporters alike gathered outside the courthouse. Many held signs condemning healthcare practices, with slogans such as “Death by Denial Is Murder!” and “Health Insurance Practices Terrorize People!”. Some donned hats resembling those worn by Luigi from the Super Mario Bros. video game, a nod to Mangione’s first name.
“We’re here to highlight the real issues,” said protester Karen Phillips. “This isn’t just about one man; it’s about a broken system.”
However, not everyone shared the protesters’ sentiments. Others questioned whether the newfound attention on Mangione’s appearance detracted from the severity of the allegations against him.
Mangione’s fresh appearance ignited social media chatter.

“First look at a clean-shaven Luigi Mangione after today’s hearing! #FreeLuigi,” one user posted, alongside a photo from the courtroom.
Another quipped, “Does Luigi have a fresh shave and haircut??? 😭😭😭”.
Not everyone was amused by the fervor. “This is not the time to glorify anyone accused of such a heinous crime,” remarked one commenter, underscoring the contentious nature of Mangione’s growing public image.
Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks confirmed Mangione’s transfer to New York authorities. “We relinquished him to the custody of the New York City Police Department, and they’ll be taking him back to New York City in a safe and secure manner,” he stated.
As Mangione heads to Manhattan to face charges of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder, his case continues to captivate a divided public. While some focus on his polished courtroom demeanor, others remain firmly fixated on the grave allegations that brought him there.
