A desperate search is underway after a small passenger plane vanished in the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness late Thursday afternoon. The aircraft, a Cessna 208 Caravan operated by Bering Air, lost contact with air traffic control just minutes before its scheduled landing in Nome, officials confirmed.

The flight, designated Bering Air 445, departed from Unalakleet at approximately 2:40 p.m. local time. But at 3:20 p.m., just 10 minutes from its destination, the plane disappeared from radar. The last known transmission came shortly before all radio contact was lost, according to David Olson, Bering Air’s director of operations.

A Race Against Time and Nature

Alaskan winters are brutal, and the weather on Thursday was no exception. Heavy snowfall and gusty winds hampered search efforts. Local authorities, state troopers, and the Civil Air Patrol quickly mobilized a response. But with fading daylight and plummeting temperatures, the clock is ticking.

“This is some of the roughest terrain in the country, and weather conditions make any rescue mission extremely challenging,” said Captain James Porter, a veteran pilot familiar with the region. “Every minute counts in these situations.”

Who Was on Board?

The missing plane was carrying a pilot and nine passengers. Their identities have not yet been released, pending notification of families. However, Nome residents say they are bracing for the worst.

“Out here, we all know somebody on that flight,” said Mark Roberts, a local fisherman. “This is more than a news story—this is our community, our neighbors.”

Bering Air, a longtime regional carrier, operates small aircraft designed for Alaska’s remote locations. The Caravan 208 model is widely used in bush aviation and can carry up to nine passengers.

A Dangerous Pattern?

While aviation is a lifeline for many Alaskans, accidents remain a stark reality. Harsh weather, rugged terrain, and mechanical strain all contribute to the risks. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation, and many are demanding answers.

“This is the third aviation incident in Alaska in the last year,” said aviation safety advocate Lisa Hendricks. “How many more tragedies before real improvements are made?”

As search crews battle against time and the elements, families wait anxiously for news. The hope is survival—but the reality is grim.

  1. There are so many remote areas in Alaska that if the weather turned nasty, it may take days to find this plane. This is beyond tragic… Our prayers go out to the families of those passengers in hopes that by God’s amazing grace, the passengers are found alive and soon!! 🙏✈️🙏
