Joe Rogan, one of America’s most influential podcast hosts, was caught off guard when his own producer fact-checked him live on air over a video of President Donald Trump playing tennis with Serena Williams.
The slip-up sparked laughter but also underscored how social media can mislead even the most skeptical commentators.
The Podcast Exchange
During the January 31 episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan sat down with comedian Brian Simpson to discuss government responsibility in promoting fitness. He argued that a healthier America would mean “fewer losers.” As the conversation turned to sports, Rogan excitedly referenced a video of Trump playing tennis with Williams, applauding the former president’s skills.
“Did you see him play tennis with Serena Williams? He took his shoes off and he’s playing tennis with Serena Williams,” Rogan said, impressed. Simpson, skeptical, asked, “I mean playing, playing?”
Rogan assured him that while Trump wasn’t on Williams’ level, he held his own. “They’re volleying back and forth,” Rogan explained.
The Fact-Check
That’s when podcast producer Jamie Vernon interjected with a reality check—the video wasn’t recent. In fact, it was filmed back in 2015, when Barack Obama was still in office.
“Oh, it was? Oh, oh God damn it, I got lied to by the [Instagram] Reels,” Rogan admitted, laughing at his mistake.
The clip showed a younger, more agile Trump on the court, prompting Rogan to joke that Williams could “clearly f*** [Trump] up.” However, he still credited the former president for holding his ground.
“But look at it, dude, he’s firing back,” Rogan said, before Vernon clarified, “Both of his shots were out of bound.”
Trump’s Fitness and Lifestyle
Despite the mix-up, Rogan maintained that Trump, despite his diet, remains mentally sharp. “He eats nothing but McDonald’s, drinks Diet Cokes,” Rogan noted. “But he’s sharp as a tack.” He also pointed out that many men prefer active sports like tennis or golf over traditional gym workouts.
“Some guys can’t just go to a gym. They need a purpose. So they play games, play pickup basketball, whatever it is,” Rogan said. “Trump stays active, even if he eats cheeseburgers all day long.”
A Longstanding Supporter
Rogan, who endorsed Trump in 2024, remains a strong supporter. He even hosted Trump on The Joe Rogan Experience before the election and attended his inauguration. Despite occasional criticisms, Rogan acknowledges Trump’s resilience, a quality many of his supporters admire.
In an era where viral clips spread misinformation, Rogan’s on-air blunder serves as a reminder to always verify before believing everything online—even for someone as skeptical as Joe Rogan.
