Dolly Parton, the beloved queen of country music, has revealed the emotional reason behind her years of abstaining from red wine. Despite a lifetime of sobriety, Dolly, now 79, is embracing the wine world with a bold new addition to her growing Dolly Wines collection: a Pinot Noir. But her decision to step into the red wine arena is more than just a business venture. It’s deeply personal.
In a candid video posted on her social media, Dolly explained why red wine had long been off her radar. “For so many years, I couldn’t stand the color red,” she confessed. “It reminded me of that woman who tried to take my husband away.” Dolly was, of course, referring to the infamous character in her 1973 hit, Jolene — a song about a woman who threatens to steal Dolly’s partner.
But all that changed when Dolly tasted the new red wine she’s about to share with the world. “I have to admit,” she continued with a laugh, “my new Pinot Noir has changed everything. I love red now — and you will too!”
The timing couldn’t be more symbolic. Dolly’s new Pinot Noir will be released on the anniversary month of her Jolene album’s 1974 debut. The bottle’s design also carries a touching tribute — a blue butterfly label, hinting at Dolly’s deep connection to nature and her resilient spirit.
Ming Alterman, marketing director for Accolade Wines, who’s collaborating with Parton on this exciting venture, shared his admiration for Dolly’s newest creation. “Dolly’s Pinot Noir is a true labor of love. It’s crafted with precision and passion, reflecting her vibrant, fun-loving spirit. This wine is about sharing and celebrating life’s meaningful moments.”
From Sobriety to Sipping: The Unlikely Wine Lover
Before launching her Dolly Wines line, Dolly Parton was famously sober. Known for her wholesome image, she had long refrained from drinking alcohol — something that surprised many when she announced her new wine collection, which now includes not only the Pinot Noir, but also Chardonnay, Rosé, and Prosecco.
So what led Dolly to change her approach? An insider close to the star revealed, “Dolly always believed in maintaining control and staying sharp, but now at 78, she’s realized that a glass of wine can be a beautiful way to unwind. It’s therapeutic for her.”
In fact, it was the very idea of creating her wine collection that prompted her to try a sip or two. And according to her inner circle, she’s never looked back. “She’s discovered the joy of a good drink,” a source shared. “The Prosecco especially makes her feel sparkly and full of life. It lifts her spirits and keeps the ‘blues’ at bay.”
Though some close friends are taken aback by Dolly’s newfound indulgence, she’s unapologetic. “It’s a new chapter in her life,” said the source. “She’s never been one to deny herself the simple pleasures. Whether it’s a glass of bubbly or a nice bourbon, Dolly is living her best life.”
For the country icon, it’s clear that the simple joys of life — including a glass of wine — are finally hers to enjoy, with no regrets. “At this stage in my life,” Dolly says with a wink, “why not indulge? I’m making up for lost time!”
