Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr is turning up the heat on CBS News, insisting the American people deserve full transparency in the ongoing battle over alleged election interference by the network. The controversy stems from CBS’ handling of a “60 Minutes” interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris, which former President Donald Trump claims was deceptively edited to benefit his Democratic rival.
Trump filed a staggering $10 billion lawsuit against CBS in October, accusing the network of airing two different answers from Harris to the same question, an act his camp argues amounts to election interference. Critics slammed CBS for allegedly shielding Harris from further embarrassment after her initial response was widely mocked as incoherent “word salad.”
Under mounting pressure, CBS announced Friday it would comply with the FCC’s demands and turn over both the full transcript and raw video footage of the interview in question. Now, Carr wants answers.
Carr Speaks Out: “The American People Deserve the Truth”
Appearing on Fox News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom,” Carr explained why the unedited transcript is crucial for ensuring journalistic integrity.
“We’ve requested the full, unaltered transcript and video as part of an FCC investigation into a complaint filed under the news distortion policy. This policy has been in place for 50 years and prohibits broadcasters from deliberately misleading the public through deceptive editing,” Carr told host Dana Perino.
The FCC chairman laid out the concern. “You cannot swap out answers to make it seem like someone said something entirely different. The classic case is if someone says ‘yes’ to a question, and an editor splices in a ‘no.’ Here, CBS aired the same question on two separate programs, but Harris’s responses were noticeably different. That raises serious concerns.”
CBS was given a deadline to comply with the request, and Carr made it clear that failure to produce the materials could have serious consequences. “The transcript is due today, and I expect CBS to deliver it. The FCC cannot fully investigate claims of news distortion without reviewing the raw footage,” he added.
What Penalties Could CBS Face?
Perino pressed Carr on what actions the FCC might take if the investigation finds wrongdoing.
“We have a full range of options at our disposal when it comes to broadcast licensees,” Carr explained. “While no decisions have been made yet, it is impossible to dismiss this complaint outright without reviewing the actual footage. Was the interview edited merely for clarity and brevity, or was there a more nefarious motive? That is what we are determining.”
The FCC chairman also took aim at the previous administration’s handling of the case. “At the tail end of the Biden administration, my predecessor swiftly dismissed this complaint. But how can you make that determination without even looking at the footage?”
CBS Under Fire for Handling of Harris Interview
The dispute centers on an exchange between Harris and “60 Minutes” correspondent Bill Whitaker regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In a preview aired on “Face the Nation,” Harris responded to a question about Netanyahu seemingly ignoring U.S. demands with a meandering answer:
“Well, Bill, the work that we have done has resulted in a number of movements in that region by Israel that were very much prompted by, or a result of, many things, including our advocacy for what needs to happen in the region.”
The convoluted response became the subject of mockery among conservatives. However, when the same question aired in the primetime election special the following night, Harris appeared to give a more concise and confident answer:
“We are not going to stop pursuing what is necessary for the United States to be clear about where we stand on the need for this war to end.”
CBS Denies Wrongdoing
CBS has pushed back on Trump’s accusations, stating that while the editing process trims interviews for clarity, it does not manipulate answers.
“Same question. Same answer. But a different portion of the response. When we edit any interview, whether a politician, an athlete, or a movie star, we strive to be clear, accurate, and on point,” CBS said in a previous statement.
What Happens Next?
With CBS pledging to hand over the transcript and footage, all eyes are on the FCC’s next move. Carr emphasized that the commission remains “open-minded” but underscored that transparency is essential.
“The American people deserve to see this for themselves. And let’s be clear: CBS releases transcripts of other interviews. Why should this one be any different?” Carr questioned.
As the investigation unfolds, one thing is certain: this battle over media integrity and election interference is far from over.
