As Donald J. Trump steps into his second term as president, CNN appears to be adjusting its approach to covering his administration. The network’s CEO, Mark Thompson, recently urged prominent anchors to show restraint when discussing Trump’s past controversies during inauguration coverage.

This directive, first reported by Status media reporter Oliver Darcy, marks a notable departure from CNN’s previous posture under former CEO Jeff Zucker. Zucker’s tenure saw the network take an overtly critical stance on Trump, focusing extensively on his scandals, including two impeachments and a felony conviction.

“Let’s not relitigate the past,” Thompson reportedly said during a Sunday editorial meeting. “We have a responsibility to cover this presidency fairly and avoid prejudgment.”

Thompson’s comments reflect his vision for a less combative approach to covering Trump. “The president deserves respect as the nation’s leader, even when there’s room for disagreement,” he said, according to Status. Thompson also emphasized the importance of including voices from across the political spectrum, stating, “The MAGA movement is a significant force in American politics, and it deserves a seat at the table.”

This tonal shift has been evident in CNN’s recent broadcasts. High-profile anchors like Jake Tapper and Anderson Cooper, known for their sharp critiques of Trump during his first term, adopted a more reserved demeanor during inauguration coverage.

One unnamed network insider told Status, “It’s clear that Thompson wants CNN to be seen as less partisan. The days of endless finger-pointing may be behind us.”

Despite Thompson’s guidance, critics question whether CNN can maintain journalistic integrity while avoiding Trump’s controversial history. Trump’s first days back in office have already stirred debate. His administration has announced plans to end birthright citizenship, pardon January 6 participants, and withdraw from global agreements like the Paris Climate Accord and the World Health Organization.

Still, Thompson insists that covering these policies objectively does not require rehashing old grievances. “We can be fair-minded without being overly critical,” he told staff during a follow-up meeting on Monday.

Former CNN executives and commentators are skeptical. “If you’re giving deference to someone with Trump’s record, you’re not informing the public—you’re enabling propaganda,” said a former senior producer.

Republican viewers have noticed the softer tone, with some expressing cautious optimism. “It’s about time CNN started treating conservatives with respect,” said Linda Harrison, a retiree from Ohio. “I don’t need them to agree with Trump, but I’d like them to give him a fair shake.”

Others remain skeptical of CNN’s intentions. “This might be a PR move,” remarked Tom Jackson, a veteran from Florida. “Let’s see if they keep this up when Trump starts making tough calls.”

As CNN recalibrates its coverage, all eyes are on how the network handles the unpredictable presidency ahead. Will the new tone last, or will it crack under the weight of future controversies?

For now, one thing is clear: Mark Thompson is steering CNN into uncharted waters, aiming to restore trust across a divided nation. Whether viewers embrace this shift remains to be seen.

  3. You don’t have to bring up the past. Just watch the mess he’s creating now. So don’t back off. Or are you afraid to tell the truth? Or are you really afraid of trump?

  4. Trump actually believes he’s a dictator with unlimited power . Trump demonstrates criminal behavior and has committed 34 felonies for which he was convicted in a court of law . Trump is not above the law and Trump belongs in prison for his convicted felonies for many years not heading up the most powerful country in the world .

  5. That’s when I quit turning the tv on. I don’t need another FOX, I would just watch it if that is what CNN chooses to do. Actually I will watch BBC and let American tv go to the trash bin.
