In a story that reads like a Hollywood thriller, a 40-year-old man clung to the exterior of a German high-speed train traveling at a staggering 175 mph—and lived to tell the tale.

The drama unfolded when the Hungarian national boarded an Intercity Express (ICE) train in Munich without a ticket. The man, who has not been named, decided to step off for a cigarette break during a stop in Ingolstadt.

According to police, he underestimated the punctuality of Germany’s rail system. As the train doors shut and began pulling out of the station, panic set in. Faced with the prospect of being left behind without his luggage, he made a desperate move.

The man leaped onto a bracket between two carriages, clutching cables for dear life as the train sped toward Nuremberg. The ICE train, known for reaching speeds of up to 282 km/h (175 mph), continued its journey uninterrupted for nearly 30 kilometers (18 miles).

Witnesses at the Ingolstadt station, horrified by what they saw, quickly alerted authorities. Federal police contacted the train’s driver, who made an emergency stop at Kinding, a small station in Upper Bavaria.

Despite enduring freezing temperatures and wind forces comparable to a hurricane, the man miraculously emerged unscathed. “It’s a miracle he survived such a dangerous act,” said a police spokesperson.

Adding to the twist, an off-duty state police officer happened to be on the train. The officer intervened, pulling the man to safety before handing him over to federal police at Nuremberg’s central station.

The passenger’s explanation? He didn’t want to lose his luggage. While his commitment to his belongings may seem admirable, police were far less impressed. “This kind of behavior isn’t just reckless—it’s life-threatening,” said a federal police representative.

The man is now facing charges for “acts disruptive to operations,” classified as an administrative offense in Germany. While this charge may sound minor, officials emphasized the potential consequences of his actions. “We cannot stress enough: risking your life like this isn’t worth it,” said the spokesperson.

This incident is just one of many recent examples highlighting safety concerns on Europe’s trains. German authorities have called for greater public awareness of train safety, particularly in an age where social media stunts can encourage risky behavior.

One Ingolstadt resident, who witnessed the event, summed up the sentiment: “It’s shocking. Trains are safe if you follow the rules, but this man treated it like a thrill ride.”

While this Hungarian traveler walked away unharmed, officials hope his story will serve as a cautionary tale. In Germany, known for its precision and efficiency, even a moment of poor judgment can lead to life-threatening consequences.

Would you risk your life for your luggage? For this man, the answer was an unequivocal yes.
