The community and viewers across central Pennsylvania are mourning the loss of Soni Dimond, the radiant face of WHTM abc27’s morning show, who passed away on Thursday following complications from cardiac arrest suffered on Dec. 27. She was 67.
Dimond, a proud advocate for living vibrantly at any age, was a trailblazer in local television and a beloved personality whose charm and elegance defined her decades-long career.
Dimond’s journey began humbly in 1978 as an intern at WTPA-TV 27, now known as WHTM abc27. Just a year later, her talent and tenacity earned her a historic role as the station’s first weekend news anchor.
“She was fearless and made us all believe we could achieve the impossible,” recalled former colleague Tom Reynolds. “Her drive and charisma were contagious.”
While anchoring weekend broadcasts, Dimond also delivered compelling hard news and engaging feature reports that resonated with viewers.
In the 1980s, Dimond left the newsroom to pursue entrepreneurial ventures, founding her own fashion and lifestyle businesses. Her public relations firm, Soni Dimond Media, earned the prestigious “Best 50 Women in Business in Pennsylvania” award in 2003.
Dimond’s connection with the community never waned. In 2018, she returned to WHTM abc27 as a part-time host for Good Day PA. Her signature segment, “Vibrant Living,” catered to senior viewers, promoting health, joy, and fulfillment in later years.
“This was her vision,” said Good Day PA host Amy Kehm. “She didn’t just talk about vibrant living—she embodied it. Soni’s energy and positivity were unmatched. She reminded us all to embrace every stage of life with grace and gratitude.”
Kehm grew emotional reflecting on her friend and mentor. “I’m a better person for knowing Soni. Her name couldn’t have been more fitting—she truly was a diamond who shined bright in every room she entered.”
Dimond’s influence extended far beyond the television screen. She was known for her warmth, elegance, and unwavering faith. Colleagues and fans admired her ability to inspire others to live fully and with purpose.
“She was more than a colleague—she was family,” said longtime producer Karen Jensen. “Her passion for storytelling and her dedication to the community left an indelible mark.”
Soni Dimond is survived by her husband, Kevin Martorana, and a legacy of love and resilience that will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
