A Texas police officer was critically injured after being thrown from a moving car during an attempted arrest in Beaumont early Friday. The shocking event, captured on video, has drawn outrage as bystanders jeered and filmed the unconscious officer instead of offering assistance.
The video begins with a chaotic scene in a parking lot. A woman, later identified as 28-year-old Jamaysha Butler, sprints across the lot and leaps into a convertible. A pursuing officer attempts to intervene by jumping into the back seat, but Butler accelerates. The sudden motion flings the officer headfirst onto the pavement.

The officer, whose name has not been released, suffered a severe head injury, including a brain bleed, according to the Beaumont Police Department. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and is now in stable condition.
As the officer lay unconscious, a group of bystanders gathered, laughing and recording the scene. One individual was heard mocking the injured officer, shouting, “Yo, yo! Police! Step on my man!”
The video, originally posted on TikTok, quickly spread across social media, with mixed reactions. Some commenters joined in the mockery, while others expressed disgust.
One social media user wrote, “Beaumont police plays dead after woman smoothly escapes,” while another commented, “Dude thought he was Paul Blart,” referencing the comedic security guard character.
Butler was arrested shortly after the incident and faces multiple charges, including intoxication assault and evading detention, both resulting in serious bodily harm to a peace officer.
Police also detained Melissa Bell, 22, who allegedly assaulted an officer during the commotion. Bell reportedly kicked and kneed an arresting officer while being taken into custody. She faces charges of public intoxication, resisting arrest, interference with public duties, assault on a peace officer, and outstanding warrants.
Both Butler and Bell have prior arrests. Court records reveal Butler’s history includes charges related to reckless endangerment and DUI offenses. Bell’s record lists previous incidents of public disturbance and assault.
The Beaumont Police Department has condemned the behavior of the bystanders, emphasizing the lack of humanity shown in mocking a gravely injured officer. “This incident highlights a troubling trend of prioritizing viral moments over basic decency,” the department stated in a Facebook post.
Local residents have voiced their concerns.
“It’s heartbreaking to see someone in uniform treated this way,” said Sarah Jenkins, a retired teacher. “Regardless of how people feel about law enforcement, this officer was just doing his job.”
State Representative Mike Carter also weighed in, calling for harsher penalties for those who obstruct or harm peace officers.
“This kind of lawlessness undermines the safety of our communities,” Carter said. “We need to restore respect for those who protect and serve.”
As the officer recovers, the department has launched a full investigation. Officials are urging witnesses to come forward with additional footage or information. The incident has also reignited discussions about social media’s impact on public behavior.
While Butler and Bell await their court appearances, the focus remains on supporting the injured officer and addressing the cultural factors that enabled such behavior. The community is rallying to ensure that such an incident does not happen again, with renewed calls for civility and respect.
