A somber Christmas night turned tragic on the Upper East Side when a 49-year-old man lost his life in a chilling subway mishap.
The man, taking a smoke break between subway cars, fell onto the tracks and was crushed beneath a northbound 6 train near the 77th Street and Lexington Avenue station, police and sources revealed.
The incident unfolded around 10 p.m., as the man reportedly stumbled while puffing a cigarette. Emergency crews later found him lifeless under the train, in the dark expanse of the tunnel stretching between the 68th and 77th Street stations. Authorities are withholding his identity until his family has been notified.
The grim scene caused delays across the subway system as officials worked to investigate and clear the tracks. The tragedy underscores the risks of disregarding safety protocols in the city’s vast transit system, where stepping between cars remains illegal for good reason.
While rare, similar incidents have occurred, sparking renewed calls for stricter enforcement of subway safety rules.
