Myles Garrett, the Cleveland Browns’ defensive anchor and reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, sent shockwaves through the stadium Sunday after a sudden eye injury left him writhing in pain during the game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The incident unfolded in the second quarter when Garrett faced off against Chiefs guard Joe Thuney. As the two clashed, Thuney’s hand appeared to inadvertently graze Garrett’s face, making contact with his eye. The aftermath was immediate and alarming. Garrett tore off his helmet mid-play, hurling it to the ground before dropping to his knees, visibly distressed.

“I knew something was wrong right away,” said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “You hate to see a guy like that go down. I just wanted to make sure the medics got to him fast.” Mahomes’ quick gestures summoned medical personnel, who attended to Garrett on the field while Browns fans held their breath.

As Garrett was escorted off the field with a towel draped over his head, Joe Thuney was seen walking alongside him, offering what appeared to be an apology. “It was unintentional,” Thuney reportedly told a teammate on the sidelines. “I just hope he’s okay.”

Garrett, known for his toughness and dominance, was officially listed as questionable to return, leaving the Browns’ defense scrambling against a formidable Chiefs offense.

The Browns, already struggling at 3-10 this season, faced an uphill battle against Kansas City. The Chiefs wasted no time capitalizing, with Noah Gray and JuJu Smith-Schuster finding the end zone to give their team a commanding lead.

Without Garrett applying his usual pressure, Mahomes had more room to operate, further complicating Cleveland’s efforts. “When you lose a player like Myles, it’s like losing your engine,” Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said postgame. “He’s the heart of our defense.”

Fans took to social media to express their concern and opinions about the incident. “Praying for Garrett,” one fan tweeted, while another speculated, “It looked serious; hope he’s not out for the season.” Others were less sympathetic, with comments like, “It’s football. Shake it off and get back out there.”

This wasn’t the first time Garrett’s intensity on the field has drawn mixed reactions, but his impact on the game is undeniable. A five-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro, Garrett’s presence—or absence—changes the complexion of any matchup.

Since being drafted first overall in 2017, Garrett has been the Browns’ brightest star in an era of rebuilding. His contributions have earned him accolades, including the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year award. Despite his success, Cleveland has struggled to find consistency, languishing at the bottom of the AFC North this season.

Sunday’s injury raises questions about how the Browns will navigate the remainder of their season without their defensive leader if Garrett’s recovery is prolonged.

As the Browns battle through a disappointing season, Garrett’s injury highlights the physical toll of professional football. It also serves as a reminder of the fine line between competition and sportsmanship.

“I think everyone felt that moment,” Mahomes said. “No matter which team you’re on, you respect a guy like Myles. You want him to be okay.”

For now, the Browns and their fans wait for updates, hoping their star will be back on the field soon.
