Fans tuning into Sunday’s Chiefs-Bills showdown on CBS got a little more than football analysis when Tony Romo, mid-sentence, suddenly let out a strange noise live on air.

The former Cowboys quarterback — now CBS’s lead NFL analyst — was breaking down a defensive holding call on Bills cornerback Cole Bishop during the first quarter when he appeared to… grunt.

Romo, sitting alongside longtime partner Jim Nantz, had just pointed out two possible penalties on the replay when he released what many described as a “groan-like sound.” The cameras quickly cut back to the field, leaving viewers wondering what exactly had just happened.

“But, I saw it on the other side as well, so you’ve got to call it,” Romo continued, seemingly unfazed — though social media was already lighting up.

Within minutes, X (formerly Twitter) exploded with reactions. “Did Tony Romo just moan on national TV?” one user asked. Another joked, “I think Romo had gas.” Someone else summed it up bluntly: “That was weird.”

The clip spread like wildfire, with fans replaying the mysterious noise and speculating about what caused it — technical glitch? mic slip? or just Romo being Romo?

Meanwhile, the game itself didn’t disappoint. Josh Allen led the Bills to a 28-21 victory over Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, marking Buffalo’s fifth straight regular-season win over Kansas City. Allen — the reigning NFL MVP — was near perfect, throwing one touchdown and running for two more while setting a franchise record with an 88.5% completion rate (23 of 26 passes).

Next up, the Bills head to Miami to face the Dolphins, while the Chiefs get a bye week before battling the Broncos in Denver on November 16.

But for many fans, the real highlight — or head-scratcher — of Sunday’s broadcast wasn’t the scoreline. It was that bizarre moment when Tony Romo made NFL history for a sound no one could explain.
