A serene afternoon at Sandhill Crane Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, descended into a nightmare when a man was brutally beaten and drowned on the course. The suspect? A naked attacker wielding the victim’s own golf clubs.
Police have charged 36-year-old Junior Boucher with first-degree murder in the shocking death of 65-year-old Brian Hiltebeitel, a beloved local resident known for his love of the game and easy-going nature.
The attack, which investigators have labeled a “random act of violence,” took place around 1:30 p.m. on Monday. According to Palm Beach Gardens Police Chief Dominick Pape, the assault was vicious, relentless, and ultimately fatal. “This was a senseless and brutal act of violence,” Pape said during a press conference. “The suspect used the victim’s own golf clubs to carry out the attack, which ended in his tragic death.”
A Gruesome Scene
Witnesses described a scene straight out of a horror movie. One man, who had just started his game, saw Hiltebeitel desperately retreating from Boucher, who was swinging a golf club with alarming force.
“Hiltebeitel was yelling, ‘He’s trying to kill me!’ over and over,” the witness recalled. “Then they fell to the ground, and Boucher began striking him repeatedly with the club.”
As Hiltebeitel tried to flee, Boucher chased him toward a pond on the course. Once there, the assault escalated. Boucher reportedly tackled Hiltebeitel into the water and began choking him. Moments later, he allegedly retrieved another golf club and delivered more blows to the victim’s head, even as Hiltebeitel lay motionless in the pond.
The Aftermath
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Hiltebeitel’s lifeless body lying on the fairway, his head marked with deep lacerations. Nearby, Boucher—naked and unresponsive to commands—attempted to flee. Officers were forced to deploy a taser to subdue and arrest him.
During questioning, Boucher provided a shocking twist. He claimed his real name was Manuel Acosta Rodriguez, a statement that raised even more questions about his identity.
Court documents revealed that just an hour before the attack, Boucher had been reported missing by local authorities. His erratic behavior and lack of any known connection to the victim or the golf course suggest the assault was entirely random.
Community in Shock
News of the violent murder has left the Palm Beach Gardens community in shock. Hiltebeitel was a regular at the Sandhill Crane Golf Club and well-liked by fellow golfers.
“He was always smiling, always kind,” one club member said. “To think he died like this… it’s unthinkable.”
Boucher, who showed no signs of remorse during his initial court appearance, was denied bond. The judge also prohibited him from contacting any witnesses or possessing weapons.
As the investigation continues, authorities are piecing together the timeline of events leading up to the gruesome attack. For now, the community is left grappling with the tragic loss of a man who went out for a game of golf—and never came back.
“This is a stark reminder of how quickly violence can erupt in the most unexpected places,” Chief Pape concluded. “Our hearts go out to Mr. Hiltebeitel’s family and friends as they mourn this unimaginable loss.”
