The chilling case of JonBenét Ramsey, a 6-year-old girl found murdered in her Boulder, Colorado, home in 1996, continues to captivate public attention.
Now, a Netflix docuseries, Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?, directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Joe Berlinger, reignites questions about the unsolved crime and the role of JonBenét’s mother, Patsy Ramsey.
On December 26, 1996, the lifeless body of JonBenét was discovered in her basement, sparking decades of speculation, media frenzy, and countless theories. Despite intense investigations, no killer has ever been identified.
The three-part series delves into the family’s dynamics, particularly Patsy Ramsey, painting a portrait of a mother under unimaginable scrutiny. A former beauty queen and journalism graduate, Patsy married John Ramsey in the early 1980s when she was 23, and he was 35. The couple built a life in Boulder after John’s career in technology took off, and they had two children together—Burke in 1987 and JonBenét in 1990.
However, the Ramsey family endured significant tragedies even before JonBenét’s death. John lost an older daughter in a car accident, and Patsy was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the early 1990s, undergoing grueling chemotherapy. Archival footage in the series shows Patsy reflecting on how JonBenét, even as a young child, showed remarkable empathy during her mother’s illness.
“She just knew… she was a very sensitive child,” Patsy said in one clip.
A Morning of Horror
The documentary revisits the horrifying morning when Patsy discovered a ransom note on the stairs, claiming JonBenét had been kidnapped. Panicked, she called 911, only for her daughter’s body to be found hours later in the basement.
This moment, captured in the docuseries, marks the beginning of an intense media circus. The Ramsey family, initially viewed as grieving parents, soon became suspects. In 1999, both John and Patsy were charged with child abuse resulting in death and accessory to murder, but the charges were dropped due to insufficient evidence.
A Mother’s Legacy
Patsy Ramsey’s life ended in 2006, when she succumbed to ovarian cancer after a relapse. To this day, debates rage over her potential involvement in JonBenét’s death. Berlinger, however, firmly believes in her innocence.
“It defies logic to think that Patsy could have done this,” Berlinger told Today. “Does anyone really believe she had the presence of mind to stage such a complex crime involving her daughter?”
The documentary underscores autopsy findings suggesting the crime required specific knowledge and tools. “This was not the work of an emotionally distraught mother,” Berlinger added.
In 2000, Patsy and John voluntarily took polygraph tests administered by a private firm. The examiner concluded that neither parent exhibited deception when asked if they killed JonBenét.
A Mystery That Haunts
Despite the passage of nearly three decades, the murder of JonBenét Ramsey remains an open wound in the collective memory. Netflix’s docuseries doesn’t provide answers but offers a deeper look into a family torn apart by tragedy and suspicion.
The lingering question of who killed JonBenét continues to loom over Boulder and beyond. For many, the case is not just a whodunit—it’s a haunting reminder of justice delayed, if not denied.
