Michael Strahan, former New York Giants star and current “NFL on Fox” analyst, has come under intense scrutiny following a Veterans Day broadcast at Naval Base San Diego. The controversy centers around his stance during the national anthem, which aired as part of Fox Sports’ annual tribute to the military.
During the live segment, the Fox NFL crew stood with their hands over their hearts, paying respects as the anthem played. Strahan, however, stood with his hands clasped in front of him, a position viewers were quick to notice. The incident, caught on camera, sparked immediate backlash on social media. Many viewers expressed outrage, feeling his gesture fell short of the respect the anthem and military deserve, particularly given the patriotic nature of the broadcast.
One critic on social media platform X wrote, “What’s wrong with Strahan, @NFLonFOX? Blatant disrespect for the men and women he is surrounded by, protecting his rights and freedoms.” Another viewer posted: “Strahan couldn’t put his hand over his heart? HAPPY VETERANS DAY TO EVERYONE EXCEPT MICHAEL STRAHAN!! NO CLASS!!”
Yet, the backlash did not go unchallenged. Strahan’s supporters swiftly came to his defense, citing his deep connection to the military. His father, Maj. Gene W. Strahan, Sr., served 23 years in the U.S. Army, including time with the elite 82nd Airborne Division. Strahan has often referred to himself as a “military brat,” a sentiment he shared during a 2022 appearance on the Rachel Ray Show.
“Strahan is the son of a retired major! I’m sure he has more respect for this country than you ever will!” one X user shot back at critics. Another supporter wrote, “I’m going to defend @michaelstrahan here. He stood very respectfully, as he was no doubt taught to do by his father. Strahan has shared many times over his respect for veterans.”
Strahan’s position remains in the spotlight because the United States Flag Code specifies that civilians should “stand at attention with their right hand over the heart” during the anthem. While some interpret this code strictly, the issue of how athletes observe the anthem has long been a contentious topic. Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas, for example, faced a similar backlash at the 2016 Summer Olympics when she stood with her hands at her sides. She later issued a public apology, insisting no disrespect was intended.
This debate grew even more charged after former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick knelt during the anthem in 2016 to protest racial injustice and police brutality. Kaepernick’s protest ignited a nationwide dialogue and made national anthem gestures a hot-button topic in American sports.
Fox Sports could not be immediately reached for comment, and Strahan’s representatives did not respond to requests from The New York Post. The network’s Veterans Day tribute has become a longstanding tradition, previously broadcasting from places like the U.S. Air Force Academy and Bagram Airfield. The 2024 edition featured NFL legend Tom Brady delivering a heartfelt message to the armed forces.
“We really honor you today in the NFL,” Brady said. “You men and women who are serving us around the world, you’re our heroes. You have our respect. You have the best team in the world — and I’ve seen some great teams. But there’s no greater team in the world than our military and our armed forces. We admire your commitment. We admire your dedication. We admire your sacrifice.”
Despite the backlash, Strahan’s history with and respect for the military are undisputed. His critics and defenders alike have added fuel to an ongoing national conversation about patriotism, symbolism, and respect. And as the NFL continues to be a platform for these debates, this latest incident involving Strahan is unlikely to be the last.

Would it have been that hard for Strahan to actually lift his hand and cover his heart?
Fuck this guy he\’s a racist Sent from my iPhone
Yes I was watching and saw the disrespect he displayed, and wondered what is up with him.
As a Marine Corps veteran it’s his right everybody claims to be so patriotic but from what I have seen from the population of this country patriotism only goes so far.
One of the reasons I and a lot of fellow veterans don’t watch NFL or any other sports anymore, because of this kind of disrespect that was shown in the past. A vietnam combat vet.

Remember this is America. We live the American way, we speak English, have one flag-the American Flag, one anthem-American anthem. Even migrants understand these things that’s why they come here. They say a photo is worth a thousand words. I say it proves he hates America just like Obama. I apologize to every Veteran and especially to all those who made ultimate sacrifice. We stand for our flag and kneel only to God. You stand with America or against America. You Michael have chosen like Obama, Omar, Talib and other’s. To many true Americans have been fooled over what these people really feel about us. Time to rethink who we allow in positions of power from city, school officials to highest office in our country. The last four years have proven my point. Like I said photos prove a lot.
