In a heated moment, President Joe Biden has sparked fury among Trump supporters after reportedly calling them “garbage” during a Tuesday call organized by Voto Latino. The president’s remark followed a string of inflammatory statements made by speakers at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally on Sunday, where one comedian labeled Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.”
“Puerto Ricans are good, decent, honorable people,” Biden stated. “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.” Biden’s comments were met with backlash, particularly from conservative corners, who quickly compared the statement to Hillary Clinton’s infamous “basket of deplorables” comment from the 2016 campaign.
White House spokesman Andrew Bates clarified that Biden’s “garbage” reference was aimed directly at the “hateful rhetoric” at Trump’s rally, not the supporters themselves. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Biden echoed this sentiment, saying, “The hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed at the rally is garbage—plain and simple.”
The Trump campaign wasted no time in seizing upon Biden’s comment, using it as ammunition to stir support and drawing comparisons to Clinton’s 2016 misstep. Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt called it “indefensible,” asserting that “Biden and Harris despise the millions who support Trump.”
Experts, however, are skeptical of any lasting impact. Northeastern University’s Costas Panagopoulos noted that Biden, unlike Clinton in 2016, isn’t the candidate this time around. “The MAGA base is already locked in. Biden’s comment isn’t likely to shift their views,” he told Newsweek.
Syracuse University’s Grant Davis Reeher argued that, in the current polarized political climate, remarks like these might simply be par for the course. “Given all we’ve heard from both sides for eight years, I don’t think this adds anything new,” Reeher said, adding, “It doesn’t rise to an October surprise.”
Despite Biden’s walk-back, former President Trump has continued to weaponize the comment against Vice President Kamala Harris, who has taken a more visible role as the campaign’s figurehead. “You can’t lead America if you don’t love the American People,” Trump stated on X, also accusing Harris of comparing him to “mass murderers.”
Meanwhile, Harris herself has maintained a strong stance, describing Trump as a “fascist” in a recent CNN town hall, remarks that align with former Trump Chief of Staff John Kelly’s recent statement to The New York Times claiming Trump fits the label.
As Election Day approaches, both parties are digging in.

Not all Trump supporters are garbage….some are really dumb that still believe in the most fact-checked documented liar in the world. Some like Musk, believe in the eventual Fourth Turning and want to accelerate the process so they can be in control…and some just want to make money in environmentally damaging industries and care not about the future…Some are Faux Christians that think going to the past would make people more compliant to their nonsense…But in reality, in just about every case, Trump appeals to the darker selfish, xenophobic demons that most people have inside…
