The Labor government has taken decisive action in blocking Candace Owens, a prominent conservative commentator, from entering Australia, citing concerns that her rhetoric could stir division across religious and minority groups.

Immigration Minister Tony Burke announced the visa cancellation, pointing to the Donald Trump-aligned influencer’s inflammatory remarks as posing a direct risk to national unity.

“From downplaying the impact of the Holocaust with comments about [SS officer Josef] Mengele to claims that Muslims started slavery, Candace Owens has the capacity to incite discord in almost every direction,” Burke stated. “Australia’s national interest is best served when Candace Owens is somewhere else.”

This decision marks a significant stand from the Labor government as it aims to temper domestic tensions in the face of growing protests over the ongoing Middle East conflict. Owens has often courted controversy with her sharp critiques.

She has previously labeled Israel as a “cult” and made unsubstantiated allegations that “secret Jewish gangs” operate in Hollywood. Her remarks have not only drawn ire from Jewish organizations worldwide but also led to her removal from The Daily Wire in March following a series of antisemitic comments.

Owens, who originally rose to prominence as the communications director for Turning Point USA from 2017 to 2019, continues to reach a massive online audience. Her YouTube channel has 18 million followers, where she remains vocal on issues of race, religion, and identity. Recently, she described Mengele’s horrific experiments on Holocaust victims as “bizarre propaganda,” a statement that has intensified calls for her exclusion from public platforms.

Earlier this year, Jewish advocacy groups urged the government to deny Owens entry, a sentiment echoed by Coalition immigration spokesman Dan Tehan, who warned against “hateful messages” entering the Australian discourse. Tickets to her anticipated tour events, priced around $100, are now in limbo.

In response, Owens vowed to push forward, claiming the visa block as evidence of free speech under fire. But for many in Australia, Burke’s decision sends a clear message: “We will not tolerate the spread of such harmful ideologies on our soil.”
