Holmes, 47, and his partner Amy Robach, 51, discussed the incident on their podcast Amy & T.J., sharing both the physical challenges and emotional toll of the day.

“We are not having the morning after that we were expecting to have after a marathon,” Robach said on the October 14 episode. “Usually it’s celebratory, filled with relief, exuberance, and gratitude. We have some of those things, but there’s also disappointment.”

Their marathon journey wasn’t off to the smoothest start. The couple struggled to locate their designated tent, which affected their pre-race preparation. Things took a turn for the worse at the halfway point when Holmes narrowly avoided colliding with a pedestrian. “I catch myself with my right leg going down, and I immediately feel the tweak in my right hip and buttcheek,” Holmes said, noting that his injury stemmed from a pre-existing issue with his IT band.

Robach, unaware of the severity at first, began to realize the extent of Holmes’ pain a few miles later. “You were literally grunting in pain,” she recalled. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe he’s in that much pain.’”

At mile 21, the decision to stop became unavoidable. Holmes’ knee began to swell, and an old Achilles injury started to flare up. Soon after, he began vomiting on the street, prompting paramedics to intervene and call for an ambulance.

“You looked awful,” Robach remembered. “You were so pale, shivering in your wet clothes, and the wind made it worse. Then you started vomiting again. They wanted to take you to the hospital at that point.”

Though the situation seemed dire, Holmes was taken to a medical tent rather than the hospital. Robach, along with two paramedics, assisted him, knowing Holmes would refuse a stretcher.

As if the day wasn’t difficult enough, Holmes experienced another unexpected mishap while waiting for an Uber. “All of a sudden, T.J. looks at me and says, ‘Robes, you gotta help me.’ A bird had just s— on his head,” Robach shared, calling it the “cherry on top of a rough day.”

Holmes grew emotional as he reflected on the day and Robach’s unwavering support. “You performed in a way yesterday that I can only compare to how my mom would’ve taken care of me when I was desperate,” Holmes said. “You didn’t finish because of my bum ass yesterday. I didn’t think it was possible, but I love you even more.”

Robach, however, was resolute. “That’s what love is. If you didn’t fully trust how much I love you, yesterday proved it.”

Despite the challenges, Holmes remains determined. He’s already preparing for the New York City Marathon on November 3, just days after his Chicago ordeal. In a humorous exchange, his sister, Tish, playfully scolded him in an Instagram text: “You haven’t been that much of a dumb a— in a while!” she joked, referring to his quick return to training.

While Robach is undecided about participating in the New York marathon, she’s considering another race in the future. Reflecting on her experience, she admitted, “I had thought the Chicago Marathon might be my last because it does take a toll on your body.”

Holmes and Robach are not just focused on their athletic pursuits—they continue to share a strong partnership. Despite the physical toll of the race, their bond seems stronger than ever.
