Queen Elizabeth II managed to pull off one of the biggest surprises in royal history, and even her own family had absolutely no idea what she was planning.
The late monarch, known for her serious public image and unwavering dedication to royal tradition, secretly teamed up with Hollywood star Daniel Craig for an unforgettable James Bond appearance at the 2012 London Olympics.
But while millions of viewers watched the extraordinary stunt unfold, some of the most stunned spectators were sitting right inside the royal family.
Her grandson Peter Phillips recalled the family’s disbelief in a BBC documentary celebrating what would have been Elizabeth’s 100th birthday, revealing how their grandmother managed to keep her unlikely Hollywood debut under wraps.
The surprise began when Craig, playing the legendary British secret agent, appeared at Buckingham Palace during the Olympic opening ceremony. As Bond made his way through the palace, viewers saw a woman sitting at a desk with her back to the camera.
Even members of the royal family initially assumed an actress had been hired to portray the Queen.
Then the woman turned around.
It was Elizabeth herself, calmly greeting the fictional spy before joining him for what appeared to be a spectacular helicopter journey across London.
Phillips, the son of Princess Anne, recalled wondering who had been chosen to play his grandmother before realizing the truth.
He described the family’s reaction as sheer amazement, calling it one of the best-kept secrets because “literally nobody knew.”
The surprise had been carefully orchestrated. Members of the Olympic production team previously revealed that keeping the appearance hidden from Elizabeth’s relatives was one of the conditions of her participation.
The elaborate sequence, directed by filmmaker Danny Boyle, ended with Bond and the Queen appearing to parachute from a helicopter above the Olympic stadium.
Of course, the monarch, then 86, didn’t actually leap from an aircraft. She filmed her scenes at Buckingham Palace, while professional stunt performers Gary Connery and Mark Sutton carried out the dramatic parachute sequence dressed as the Queen and Bond.
Moments later, Elizabeth appeared in the stadium wearing the same peach-colored outfit seen in the film, completing an illusion that delighted audiences around the world.
The extraordinary performance offered a rare glimpse of the Queen’s playful personality, something the BBC explored further in its documentary, Queen Elizabeth II: Her Story, Our Century, which aired in April 2026.
The program featured personal memories from Queen Camilla, former President Barack Obama, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, actress Helen Mirren and legendary broadcaster David Attenborough.
Camilla praised her mother-in-law’s extraordinary dedication to the monarchy, describing a woman whose sense of responsibility shaped nearly every aspect of her life.
Her commitment began long before she became Queen. During World War II, the young Princess Elizabeth joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service, training as a driver and mechanic before unexpectedly ascending the throne in 1952 following her father’s death.
But the documentary didn’t shy away from the more difficult chapters of her reign, including the criticism she faced following Princess Diana’s death in 1997.
It also revisited one of the most heartbreaking images of Elizabeth’s final years: the Queen sitting alone at Prince Philip’s funeral in April 2021, following coronavirus restrictions while mourning her husband of 73 years.
Phillips recalled how desperately he wanted to comfort his grandmother during the ceremony but was unable to embrace her because of the restrictions.
The film also explored the monarchy’s complicated relationship with public attention, including rare footage from the controversial 1969 documentary Royal Family, which offered viewers an unusually intimate look at royal life.
Elizabeth died in September 2022 at age 96, bringing an end to a historic 70-year reign that spanned enormous political, cultural and social change.
Yet among the countless ceremonies, royal tours and historic appearances, her secret mission alongside James Bond remains one of her most unforgettable moments.
For a woman who spent most of her life following strict royal protocol, the Queen proved she could still surprise the world.
And perhaps the most remarkable part was that she managed to fool her own family along the way.
