A terrifying attack at a popular Illinois shopping mall ended with two heroic strangers rushing into a pond to save an older woman who police say was being held underwater by a man she had never met.

The frightening incident unfolded in broad daylight Tuesday, October 13, at Westfield Old Orchard, an outdoor shopping center in Skokie, a suburb just north of Chicago.

Witnesses say the woman was completely submerged as the attacker held her in a headlock, prompting bystanders to jump into the water and intervene before police arrived.

Now, the suspected attacker, identified as 35-year-old William Dobbs of Skokie, is facing an attempted murder charge and two additional felony charges.

According to the Skokie Police Department, officers were dispatched to the shopping center at approximately 11:01 a.m. after receiving reports of an attempted robbery and a violent confrontation near a decorative koi pond at the north end of the mall.

Investigators believe the woman was walking through the shopping center when Dobbs approached her.

The two were strangers, and police said the attack appeared to be unprovoked.

Dobbs allegedly struck the woman with a saddle-style bag before pushing her into the pond.

What happened next left nearby shoppers horrified.

Police say the suspect held the woman’s head beneath the water as she struggled to escape.

One witness told CBS Chicago that she initially thought she was looking at a man swimming alone.

“We thought he was just swimming by himself until we came closer and saw a woman underneath the water,” the witness recalled.

She described seeing the woman’s body submerged while the man held her in a headlock.

As the seriousness of the situation became clear, two Good Samaritans reportedly entered the pond and managed to separate the woman from her attacker.

Their intervention brought the assault to an end before responding officers arrived.

Police found Dobbs still at the shopping center and took him into custody without a reported struggle.

The woman was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Despite the frightening circumstances, authorities said her injuries were not life-threatening.

Her name and exact age have not been publicly released, although police identified her as an older woman.

Investigators initially received reports suggesting the suspect might have been carrying a handgun. However, officers found no evidence supporting those claims, and police clarified that the firearm report was unsubstantiated.

Video recorded shortly after the incident showed officers escorting a man away in handcuffs as shaken shoppers gathered nearby.

Other footage showed authorities examining the pond and collecting potential evidence.

The shopping center released a statement acknowledging the incident and confirming that it was cooperating with investigators.

“The safety and well-being of our visitors, retailers and employees remain our top priority,” a spokesperson said.

The attack stunned shoppers at Westfield Old Orchard, a well-known outdoor retail destination featuring major department stores, restaurants and popular national retailers.

The pond where the confrontation unfolded is normally a peaceful decorative feature surrounded by walkways used by families and shoppers.

Instead, it became the scene of a violent encounter that could have ended much differently without the quick actions of nearby witnesses.

By Wednesday, October 14, prosecutors had announced serious criminal charges against Dobbs.

He was charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery to a senior citizen and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.

The charges suggest prosecutors believe the alleged attack went beyond an attempted robbery and involved conduct capable of causing the woman’s death.

However, the charges remain allegations, and Dobbs is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

He was scheduled to appear Wednesday at the Skokie courthouse for a detention hearing, where a judge would consider whether he should remain in custody while the criminal case proceeds.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive or explained why the woman was allegedly targeted.

Police are continuing to review witness statements and evidence collected from the shopping center.

The case also highlights how quickly an apparently ordinary public setting can become the scene of a life-threatening emergency.

Drowning can occur when a person’s ability to breathe is impaired while submerged in water, and prolonged oxygen deprivation can cause serious injury even when someone is eventually rescued.

Medical evaluation is particularly important after such incidents because breathing complications may require further treatment or observation.

Fortunately, the woman survived and was able to receive hospital care.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the attack or recorded relevant footage to contact the Skokie Police Department at 847-982-5900.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the department’s 24-hour hotline at 847-933-8477.

For the woman at the center of the frightening ordeal, the actions of two strangers may have made all the difference.

What began as an ordinary shopping trip ended in a desperate struggle for survival, with bystanders refusing to stand by while another person’s life appeared to be in danger.
