The desperate search for Savannah Guthrie’s missing mother has now dragged on for more than 100 days — and one of Nancy Guthrie’s closest friends says she’s terrified the case is slowly fading from the public’s mind.
Lauren Serpa, who had been friends with Nancy Guthrie for more than a decade, is now speaking out in frustration over what she says is a lack of progress in the chilling disappearance of the 84-year-old Arizona woman.
And according to Serpa, the silence surrounding the case is becoming unbearable.
“It’s starting to fizzle out, and I don’t want that to happen,” she said as the investigation entered its fourth month. “People are starting not to forget, but not to think about it as much.”
Nancy, the mother of Today show star Savannah Guthrie, vanished on January 31 after family members dropped her off at her Tucson-area home following dinner. The next morning, alarm bells went off when she failed to appear for a virtual church service.
What investigators reportedly found inside the home only deepened the mystery.
Authorities later said they believed Nancy may have been dragged from her bed against her will after blood was discovered outside the residence. Even more disturbing, a masked man was reportedly caught on doorbell camera footage near the home around the time she disappeared.
Despite the horrifying details, Serpa fears the public attention surrounding the case is beginning to die down.
While she praised the Tucson community for initially rallying around the family, she admitted everyday life is slowly taking over.
“That’s what happens when it doesn’t affect their lives,” she explained. “People are starting to move on basically.”
Now, Serpa is urging locals not to tune out the investigation.
She wants people paying attention to conversations, suspicious behavior, and anything unusual that could help crack the case wide open.
“Really listen to what people are saying that are standing behind you in line,” she said. “Those are the kind of things that are going to make the difference in this case.”
The emotional toll on Nancy’s loved ones, she added, has been devastating.
“It just breaks my heart,” Serpa said. “The family is going through so much. It just doesn’t make any sense.”
As the mystery drags on, supporters have continued leaving flowers and memorial items outside Nancy’s longtime Catalina Foothills home, where she had lived since the 1970s.
But even that sparked concern among neighborhood leaders.
Will Pew, president of the local homeowners association, recently asked well-wishers to stop leaving items outside the property, saying residents were already deeply shaken by the disappearance and ongoing FBI investigation.
In a message to neighbors, Pew reminded the community that Nancy had deep roots in Tucson and that her family continues to suffer while waiting for answers.
“Our homes may be relatively far apart, but we, as neighbors, are closer than ever,” he wrote.
So far, no arrests have been made and Nancy Guthrie remains missing.
