“Dr. Pimple Popper” star Sandra Lee is opening up about a terrifying medical emergency that struck while cameras were rolling — and the aftermath has changed her life in ways she never expected.
The 55-year-old dermatologist revealed she suffered a stroke during filming of her reality show, initially brushing off the warning signs as something far less serious. What started as what she thought was a simple hot flash quickly spiraled into a full-blown medical crisis.
“I got super sweaty and didn’t feel like myself,” Lee recalled, describing the moment things began to go wrong. But it didn’t stop there. After leaving set and heading to her parents’ home, her symptoms escalated fast — with shooting pain, difficulty walking, and alarming loss of control on the left side of her body.
“I would hold my hand out, and it would just slowly collapse,” she said. “I had a tough time articulating and enunciating. That’s when I thought, ‘Am I having a stroke?’”
It was her father — also a doctor — who urged her to get to the hospital immediately. An MRI confirmed the worst: Lee had suffered an ischemic stroke.
“What essentially happened is I had a part of my brain that died,” she revealed.
The shocking diagnosis forced her to halt production for two months as she focused on recovery. Even now, Lee admits she’s still dealing with the fallout — including weakened grip in her left hand and subtle but noticeable changes to her speech.
“I don’t speak exactly the way I used to,” she said. “It’s very scary… especially as a surgeon, where you always want to come from a place of strength.”
The experience has also left emotional scars. Lee says she still struggles with PTSD from the moment it happened — especially since it unfolded while she was working under pressure on set.
She believes stress played a major role in triggering the stroke, admitting her blood pressure and cholesterol were not under control at the time.
Despite the ordeal, Lee has since returned to filming her new Lifetime series, Dr. Pimple Popper: Breaking Out, though she admits she had serious fears about performing intricate procedures again.
Now, she’s speaking out with a mission — to break the stigma and urge others to take symptoms seriously.
“If you have symptoms like I had, make sure you see your doctor,” she warned. “Take care of yourself.”
Lee first rose to fame through viral skincare videos before becoming a household name on TLC’s Dr. Pimple Popper. Now, her story is serving as a chilling reminder that even the most recognizable faces aren’t immune to life-altering health scares — especially when the warning signs are easy to ignore.
