A routine moment in the heart of Melbourne turned into a nightmare when a man was nearly killed after a woman fell from a high-rise rooftop and landed directly on top of him.

The shocking incident unfolded just before midday Monday in a narrow laneway off William Street in Melbourne’s busy CBD, near the courts precinct. According to authorities, the man — believed to be in his 30s — was standing outside having a cigarette when tragedy struck from above.

Without warning, a woman plunged from the rooftop of a nearby 19-storey building, crashing down onto the unsuspecting pedestrian below.

The impact killed the woman instantly.

Miraculously, the man survived — but not without devastating injuries. Emergency crews rushed to the scene and transported him to Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he remains in serious condition with significant upper-body trauma.

Police quickly cordoned off the area as stunned witnesses tried to process what had just happened.

Investigators say the woman’s death is not being treated as suspicious, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

The freak accident has rattled the city, coming just weeks after another deadly fall in Melbourne’s CBD. Earlier this month, a bank employee reportedly died after plunging from the roof of an office building in Docklands.

For many locals, Monday’s horrifying chain of events is a chilling reminder of how quickly everyday life can turn into tragedy — and how, in this case, one man’s ordinary smoke break turned into a fight for survival.
