It’s déjà vu for Zachery Ty Bryan — the former Home Improvement actor just landed behind bars once more, marking yet another dark chapter in his long, troubled history with the law.
According to Lane County Jail records, the 44-year-old was arrested in Oregon on Saturday, November 29, for violating probation linked to his 2023 assault conviction. That probation wasn’t even close to being over — it was supposed to run until 2026.
The conviction traces back to a violent fight with his partner, Johnnie Faye Cartwright, 32, who shares three children with Bryan. Shockingly, Cartwright herself was also arrested that same day for a separate string of serious charges, including DUI, reckless endangerment, and attempted assault.
This isn’t Bryan’s first brush with the law — not even close. His legal problems date back to 2020, when police were called to Cartwright’s apartment after a drunken dispute. He managed to cut a deal back then, pleading guilty to menacing and landing on probation. But the arrests kept coming.
In 2023, Bryan was convicted again. Then in early 2025, things spiraled even further — he was arrested in South Carolina after allegedly assaulting and strangling Cartwright on New Year’s Day. His mugshot from that arrest showed cuts and bruises across his face, including a large mark on his forehead.
Once known as the lovable Brad Taylor on Home Improvement, Bryan’s post-TV career has been marred by DUIs, domestic violence cases, and fraud accusations. In 2021, several investors accused him of scamming them out of $50,000 through what they described as a fake tech startup. Bryan denied the allegations, claiming he’d lost money too and wasn’t “running some shady scam.”
Then, in 2024, court filings revealed he hadn’t paid a dime toward a six-figure judgment tied to his 2021 film Warning, which owed nearly $109,000.
As of this week, Bryan remains in custody while authorities review his latest probation violation. Meanwhile, his one-time partner Cartwright is also due in court for her own charges.
It’s a grim turn for the former child star once known for cracking jokes next to Tim Allen — now, his name is linked more to mugshots than sitcom reruns.
