Barack and Michelle Obama were no-shows at former Vice President Dick Cheney’s funeral Thursday — fueling fresh speculation about the former first couple’s increasingly separate public lives.
The high-profile Washington farewell drew a packed crowd at the National Cathedral, including Presidents Joe Biden and George W. Bush and former Vice Presidents Kamala Harris, Mike Pence, and Al Gore. But the Obamas’ absence was glaring — and a source told People they had no plans to attend or offer condolences in person.
They weren’t alone in sitting this one out: President Donald Trump and VP J.D. Vance weren’t invited, per Axios, after years of bad blood between Trump and the Cheney family.
Cheney, 84, died Nov. 3 from complications of pneumonia and heart disease.
The skipped service marks yet another high-profile event Michelle has missed this year — including Jimmy Carter’s funeral and Trump’s second inauguration. She was reportedly in Hawaii during Carter’s service, leaving Barack to attend solo. Cameras caught him chatting and laughing with Trump in her absence, setting off viral debates online.
Fans have since noticed Michelle’s frequent absences — and the former first lady herself hasn’t exactly helped quiet the chatter. On her podcast IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, she admitted there were “about 10 years” when she “couldn’t stand” her husband, despite the public image of a perfect marriage.
Barack echoed the sentiment in a later episode, saying their relationship was “touch and go for a while” and that he’s “spent over eight years now trying to dig [himself] out of a hole with Michelle.”
The Obamas’ reps haven’t commented on their latest no-show — but with Michelle opening up about her frustrations and solo appearances becoming the norm, it’s clear all eyes are watching how the couple navigates their next chapter out of the spotlight.
