It was supposed to be a week of Caribbean sunshine and family memories. Instead, it became a nightmare at sea.
Eighteen-year-old Anna Kepner, a popular Florida cheerleader from Titusville, was found dead aboard a Carnival Cruise ship under circumstances so disturbing they’ve launched an FBI investigation.
According to multiple sources close to the case, Anna’s body was discovered wrapped in a blanket and concealed beneath her bed, covered with life jackets. The shocking discovery was reportedly made by a cabin steward on the morning of November 7—just hours after the teen told her family she wasn’t feeling well and went to lie down.
A Cruise Turned Crime Scene
The six-day voyage had departed from Florida, bound for the Caribbean. But when Anna didn’t show up for breakfast, her family panicked. “We were there as a family. Everybody was questioned,” her father, Christopher Kepner, 41, told the Daily Mail. “The FBI hasn’t told us anything. I know as little as anybody else.”
The ship, carrying more than 4,000 passengers, cut its trip short and returned to PortMiami the following day. The FBI took over the investigation, as the death occurred in international waters between Mexico and Florida.
A spokesperson for the bureau confirmed that the incident remains “an active investigation,” but declined to comment on the condition or placement of Anna’s body.
A Promising Life Cut Short
The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner listed her time of death as 11:17 a.m., though no official cause has been released. Her body was transported to her hometown funeral home on November 11, where the community of Titusville has been left reeling.
Friends described Anna—nicknamed “Anna Banana”—as a radiant personality who loved life and laughter. “She had that type of energy that just drew you in,” one friend told ABC News. “You couldn’t help but smile around her.”
In her obituary, her family called her “bubbly, funny, outgoing, and completely herself.” She dreamed of joining the U.S. Navy and later serving as a K9 police officer—a future that now will never come.
“She wanted to help people,” said a family friend, who attended her high school’s vigil. “That was just who Anna was—bright, fearless, and kind.”
Unanswered Questions
So far, investigators have not said whether foul play is suspected. Sources told Florida Today that the FBI has conducted multiple interviews and collected cabin surveillance footage, though no arrests have been made.
Carnival Cruise Lines issued a brief statement expressing sympathy:
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement.”
Anna’s funeral will be held November 20 in Titusville. Her family has asked mourners to wear bright colors—“to honor Anna’s bright and beautiful soul.”
As the ship’s vacationers disembarked that day in Miami, few could have imagined what had unfolded behind one cabin door. For now, the question haunting the Kepner family—and investigators—is simple: how could something like this happen on a family cruise?
