Prince William reportedly considered stepping back from royal duties in 2024 but was told by his father, King Charles III, to “think again,” according to a new royal biography that paints a deeply emotional portrait of a family under immense pressure.

In The Windsor Legacy, obtained by the Daily Mail, royal author Robert Jobson claims the Prince of Wales was “shaken to the core” by the double blow of cancer diagnoses for both his father and wife, Kate Middleton. Despite his request to reduce his workload, King Charles allegedly refused, urging his son to stay the course and fulfill his growing royal responsibilities.

Sources told Fox News Digital that Kensington Palace had no comment on the book, while Buckingham Palace repeated its usual stance of not commenting on speculative royal publications.

According to Jobson, both William and Kate turned to faith as they navigated the “brutal” year, attending church more often in private. The prince, 43, reportedly struggled to juggle his official duties, support his wife through treatment, and care for their three young children. “He struggled to keep everything on track,” broadcaster Helena Chard told Fox News Digital. “The fact that he opened up to his father about the workload showed strength and self-awareness. He needed a breather to bounce back.”

Jobson’s book also reveals that King Charles endured worsening health before his cancer diagnosis, with doctors reportedly administering morphine and ordering hospitalization after a sudden decline. His cancer was discovered months later, during treatment for an enlarged prostate.

Then, in March 2024, Kate shared her own cancer diagnosis—a “malign twist of fate,” as Jobson described it. The princess later announced she had completed chemotherapy and entered remission in January 2025, a moment of relief for the royal family after a harrowing year.

The author also described the complex father-son dynamic between Charles and William, noting “underlying tension” over work ethic and tradition. While they generally cooperate well, both are known for their fiery tempers and intense focus. Palace staffers reportedly tread carefully around both men, aware of their moods.

Still, insiders say William has grown into his leadership role. “He’s decisive, hands-on, and determined to modernize the monarchy,” Chard said. “He doesn’t overthink or dwell—he takes action. He knows the future of the monarchy depends on how he and Catherine are perceived.”

As for King Charles, 76, the monarch has reportedly adopted a gentler routine amid treatment—taking afternoon naps, eating lighter lunches, and becoming more emotionally open. “Charles has been moved to tears by the letters he’s received from around the world,” Jobson wrote.

In recent interviews, William has openly described 2024 as “the hardest year of my life.” During a visit to South Africa for his Earthshot Prize event, he admitted, “It’s been dreadful. Trying to get through everything and keep things on track has been really difficult. But I’m so proud of my wife and my father for the way they’ve handled everything. It’s been brutal—but we’ve come through it together.”
