New York City’s marathon weekend took a strange turn after a 40-year-old British man, Jordan Butler, vanished in Midtown Manhattan just one day before he was reportedly set to run in one of the world’s biggest races.
Butler was last seen on the night of Nov. 1 near Times Square — outside the Westin Hotel on West 44th Street — wearing a black puffer jacket, blue jeans, and white sneakers, according to PIX 11 and The Daily Beast. Police say it’s unclear whether he ever made it to the starting line of Sunday’s New York City Marathon, which drew more than 59,000 runners this year.
Authorities have not confirmed if Butler was officially registered for the race, but his disappearance has drawn concern from both local officials and the running community. The marathon’s organizers have yet to comment.
Adding to the bizarre weekend, another man — 55-year-old Giacomo “Jack” Campione — who went missing on Halloween was found in the marathon crowd after a bystander saw him fall and alerted police. Campione, who has cognitive disabilities, was safely reunited with his family.
This isn’t the first time a UK runner has disappeared around the marathon. In 2019, Christopher Ruane, a British man who had flown in for the race, was reported missing before later being found by authorities.
New York police are urging anyone with information about Butler’s whereabouts to come forward as the search continues.
