Before she became the infamous “Damsel of Death,” Aileen Carol Wuornos lived a life marked by tragedy, neglect, and unimaginable trauma.

Born in 1956 in Rochester, Michigan, Aileen was abandoned by her mother, Diane Wuornos, at just four years old. She never knew her father, Leo Pittman, who was later sentenced to life in prison for raping a 7-year-old girl.

Left to survive on her own, Aileen and her older brother, Keith, were raised by their maternal grandparents. In interviews for the 2025 Netflix documentary Aileen: Queen of Serial Killers, she described her grandmother as a “really clean and decent” woman who didn’t drink or swear. Her grandfather, however, cast a darker shadow. Though she said he was “not nasty,” Aileen later claimed he sexually abused her.

Tragedy struck again in 1972 when both grandparents died—her grandmother from liver disease and her grandfather by suicide. Suddenly orphaned, Aileen and Keith became wards of the state. At just 15, Aileen ran away, living on the streets and turning to sex work to survive.

Between 1989 and 1990, Aileen murdered six men along central Florida highways and was suspected in a seventh case where the body was never found. She insisted she was not driven by hatred. “I’m not a man-hater,” she told the Orlando Sentinel in 1991. “I’ve been through so many traumatic experiences that either I’m walking in shock or I’m so used to being treated like dirt that I guess it’s become a way of life.” She pleaded self-defense but was sentenced to death and executed in 2002.

Her parents’ troubled lives set the stage for Aileen’s dark path. Diane eloped with Leo at just 14, and by the time Aileen was born, Diane was 16 and Leo was 19. Leo, who had also been abandoned as a child, struggled with alcohol and crime and was eventually sentenced to life in prison for rape. He died by suicide in 1969.

After Diane left the children in 1960, Aileen and Keith were sent to live with their grandparents. Aileen later revealed that her grandfather was physically and sexually abusive, and she and Keith endured a disturbing incestuous relationship. By age 13, Aileen became pregnant after being raped by a friend of her grandfather. Her child was placed for adoption after she stayed in a home for unwed mothers.

The early deaths of her grandparents left Aileen and Keith without a family support system. By 20, Aileen had also lost her brother to cancer. With no guidance or protection, she dropped out of school, turned to the streets, and began a life that would ultimately lead to infamy.

Aileen Wuornos’ story is a chilling reminder of how childhood trauma, abuse, and abandonment can shape a person’s life in devastating ways, creating a path that shocked the world.

  1. Still gave her no right to kill anyone, there are a lot of people who went through this and still managed to live normal lives.
