For decades, whispers of the “Superman Curse” have haunted Hollywood — a shadow that seems to follow those who’ve donned the cape or shared the screen with the Man of Steel. From devastating accidents to personal heartbreak and career nosedives, the legacy of playing Superman has proven far from heroic for many stars.
Christopher Reeve
Beloved for his soaring portrayal of Superman in four films, Reeve’s life took a heartbreaking turn in 1995 when a riding accident left him paralyzed.
He and his wife, Dana, became tireless advocates for paralysis research, but tragedy struck again when Reeve died of heart failure in 2004 and Dana passed from lung cancer two years later.
George Reeves
The TV Superman of the 1950s was a household name, but typecasting stifled his career. Found dead at 45 from a gunshot wound, his death was ruled a suicide — though decades later, theories still swirl that it may have been murder.
Brandon Routh
Chosen to revive the Man of Steel in 2006’s Superman Returns, Routh found steady roles elusive afterward. In January, his marriage to Dexter actress Courtney Ford ended abruptly, with the pair finalizing their divorce within weeks and agreeing to share custody of their 12-year-old son.
Margot Kidder
The fiery Lois Lane opposite Reeve faced her own real-life battles, surviving a serious car crash in 1990 that left her partially paralyzed. Financial struggles and substance abuse followed, and in 2018, she died at 69 from a drug and alcohol overdose.
Gene Hackman
As Lex Luthor, Hackman brought charm and menace to the screen — but his final chapter was grim. The 95-year-old, battling Alzheimer’s, died in his New Mexico home just a week after his wife passed from a rare rodent-borne illness. Both were only discovered days later.
Tom Welling
The Smallville star spent a decade exploring Superman’s origins, but post-show opportunities never soared. In January, he was arrested in California for DUI, later pleading guilty to a lesser charge, paying fines, and entering a DUI program.
Dean Cain
From 1993 to 1997, Cain charmed audiences in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. But after sporadic roles and convention appearances, his most notable recent work was a short run as Supergirl’s father before the series ended in 2021.
Lee Quigley
As the infant Kal-El in the 1978 Superman, Quigley became the first non-American to play the hero. Sadly, his life unraveled into substance abuse, and he died at just 14 from solvent inhalation.
The so-called Superman Curse continues to loom over the franchise — a reminder that behind the bright colors and superhuman feats, life can be far more fragile than fiction.
