Fans across Brazil are mourning the heartbreaking loss of beloved singer Vanessa Rios, who has died at just 42 after a long and courageous fight against a rare form of lung cancer.

The star passed away Saturday night in a private hospital in Recife, where she had been receiving treatment for pulmonary synovial sarcoma, an aggressive and extremely rare cancer that mostly affects young people.

Rios, who had more than 680,000 Instagram followers, was adored for her passionate performances of Brazilian brega and forró music. Her death has left a deep void in the country’s music scene, with friends, fellow musicians, and fans flooding social media with tributes to her talent and resilience.

She leaves behind her 16-year-old daughter, who she often called her “greatest joy.”

Born in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, part of Brazil’s Greater Recife region, Vanessa’s musical journey began in 2010 with the Brasília-based band Encosta Neu. Her powerful voice and stage presence quickly made her a standout performer. She went on to perform with some of Brazil’s biggest forró bands, including Kitara, Boa Toda, Capim com Mel, and Forró do Muído.

Her career took off after she recorded the hit song Lençol Vermelho in 2012, and in 2014, she won a national competition to become the lead singer of Kitara — a turning point that cemented her status as one of the genre’s rising stars.

But behind the spotlight, Vanessa faced immense challenges. In 2019, doctors discovered a sarcoma in her leg, which she bravely overcame after treatment. Four years later, tragedy struck again when she was diagnosed with pulmonary synovial sarcoma.

Despite her illness, Vanessa continued to perform, sharing her strength and optimism with fans even as her health declined.

In her final Instagram post from late September, Vanessa shared a moving reflection on love and family:
“It’s not what we have in life, but who we have in our lives that matters. That’s what truly matters – family is the anchor that keeps us steady through life’s storms.”

Her fans have since flooded the post with messages of grief and gratitude, thanking her for her music and her unwavering spirit.

Vanessa’s funeral will take place today in her hometown of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, where friends, family, and fans will say their final goodbyes to the singer who brought joy and emotion to every stage she graced.
