A family celebration turned into a heartbreaking tragedy after a mother and father died in a scalding motel bathtub following their four-year-old daughter’s birthday party in Brazil.

Military police officer Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, 37, and his partner, nail salon owner Ana Carolina Silva, 41, were found dead at the Dallas Motel in São José, Santa Catarina, on the night of August 11.

The couple had spent the day drinking while celebrating their daughter’s birthday at a food park before heading to a nightclub and eventually checking into the motel. When they failed to pick up their daughter the next morning — who had stayed overnight with Jeferson’s sister — relatives reported them missing.

When investigators arrived at the motel, they discovered both parents dead in the bathtub, where the water temperature had reached a blistering 50°C (122°F). A space heater in the room was also left on high.

Chief Medical Examiner Andressa Boer Fronza revealed on October 1 that both had died from exogenous poisoning that led to extreme heatstroke, dehydration, and organ failure. Toxicology results showed cocaine and high levels of alcohol in their systems.

Authorities ruled out foul play, electric shock, carbon monoxide poisoning, or drowning. “The cause of death was sudden and not due to third-party intervention,” said Police Chief Felipe Simão Gomes.

Still, Ana Carolina’s family has rejected speculation that she was a habitual drug user, raising concerns that the pair might have ingested something unknowingly.

The couple, who had been together for nearly 20 years, were described by friends as outgoing and devoted parents with no known history of drug use or violence.

“They may have had a bad reaction to the combination of substances and alcohol,” Chief Simão said. “Their bodies might not have been able to handle it.”

Their daughter, now left orphaned, is reportedly staying with relatives as the community mourns the devastating loss.

  1. 50 degrees Celsius? Would they have climbed in at that high knowingly? I am reminded of the tale of boiling a frog.

  2. This is too suspicious an event to consider it an accident. Cocaine found in two people with no history of drug use is one, and a space heater set on high while they are soaking in a very hot tub is another. Anyone who enjoys hot tubs knows that it is the contrast between air and water temperatures that makes it exciting and enjoyable. That’s why hot tubs are so popular at ski resorts. The article mentions no actual levels of the cocaine or alcohol in their systems, nor does it say that any alcohol or cocaine was found in the hotel room.
