San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones experienced a horrifying moment just hours before taking the field this past Thursday night — he reportedly spotted a dead body floating in the water outside his team hotel.
According to The Athletic, Jones was staying at a hotel in Marina del Rey when he noticed the body from his balcony and immediately alerted his teammates. Someone on the 49ers staff then called police. As the team boarded buses for SoFi Stadium to face the Rams, players reportedly saw investigators and a coroner’s van arriving at the marina.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the case remains under investigation, though no further details have been released.
Despite the chilling discovery, Jones went on to deliver a stunning performance during Thursday night’s game. Filling in for injured starter Brock Purdy, the 26-year-old backup completed 33 of 49 passes for 342 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions — leading the 49ers to a 26–23 victory over the Rams.
It wasn’t easy for him physically, either. Jones reportedly battled severe cramps in both legs and arms during the game, even vomiting on the sideline at one point. Team staff gave him bananas and hydration packs to keep him going.
Purdy, who signed a five-year, $265 million contract earlier this year, has been the 49ers’ starting quarterback since his breakout 2023 season. But after Jones’ stellar showing and Purdy’s two-interception performance in last week’s loss to Jacksonville, fans are already speculating about a possible quarterback controversy.
Still, Jones brushed off any talk of replacing Purdy after the game. “They brought me here to play as a backup and that’s my job,” he said. “Brock’s the starter of this team. I’m just trying to get some wins for him so it helps us down the line.”
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan praised Jones for staying composed after the shocking morning discovery. “He played his a** off,” Shanahan told reporters. “He protected the ball, made smart decisions, and kept fighting. I can’t say enough good things about Mac.”
