The gymnastics world is in mourning after Indonesian star Naufal Takdir Al Bari, just 19 years old, died following a devastating accident during training in Russia.
The Olympic hopeful was attending a national team camp in Penza when he attempted a high-level skill on the horizontal bar. He landed awkwardly in a foam pit, suffering a catastrophic neck injury that left him in intensive care for nearly two weeks before he passed away on Thursday.
“Naufal is a talented young athlete and a good person,” shared Indonesia Gymnastics Federation chairman Ita Yulati in a heartbreaking statement. “Indonesian Gymnastics has lost one of the nation’s finest. This is a deep blow and sorrow for us. May the family be given strength.”
The promising gymnast had been training for next month’s Artistic Gymnastics World Championship in Jakarta and was expected to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Russian officials confirmed they launched an investigation, concluding the young athlete had not been prepared for the advanced element he attempted. “We conducted the necessary investigation… unfortunately, the athlete was not prepared to perform such a complex element,” said federation vice president Vasily Titov.
The exact stunt he tried remains undisclosed, but his tragic death has sent shockwaves through the gymnastics community and beyond.

Where was Naufal’s trainer/Coach while he attempted a maneuver he was never trained to do? His coach or trainer should have stopped Naufal before he began the maneuver incorrectly, thus falling wrong and breaking his neck!
We are so very Sorry for his family’s loss…he was young and ready to attack life, but died unnecessarily, way before his time! Rest in Peace Naufal…
