Alex McCurry is no stranger to online parenting questions, but nothing prepared her for the comments she’d face after welcoming her youngest daughter, nicknamed “Pudge Pudge.”
Alex, who is Black, and her husband Rob, who is White, were surprised when Pudge Pudge was born with blonde hair, blue eyes, and light skin — a stark contrast to their two older kids, Chub Chub, 8, and Bubba, 6.
“I’ll be honest, one of the first things I thought was that somebody made a mistake,” Alex told PEOPLE. Since Pudge Pudge was conceived via IVF, she and Rob even requested a paternity test during the C-section. The nurse later confirmed what Alex already felt deep down: “She’s biologically your baby.”
Still, questions haven’t stopped.
From strangers on TikTok to random people in grocery stores, Alex has had to field everything from innocent curiosity to outright racial bias. One woman once assumed she was the nanny. Another accused her of stealing her own daughter.
“I was like, yes, my husband cheated and got me pregnant with his cheating baby,” Alex joked sarcastically about one particularly bizarre comment.
Rather than lash out, Alex tries to educate — both online and off. She’s gone viral for videos explaining genetics, reminding people that families come in all shades and combinations. “I try to handle it with grace and patience,” she said. “At the end of the day, as long as the kid is healthy and loved, that’s what matters.”
Alex also makes sure her three kids feel empowered about their heritage. She talks openly about their Dominican and Irish roots and plays James Brown’s “I’m Black and I’m Proud” around the house to instill confidence and pride.
These days, Alex is shifting her TikTok away from constant questions about her daughter’s appearance and focusing more on everyday parenting moments — the chaos, the laughs, and the love that make up family life.
“I try to keep up, but I’m only one person and I’m tired,” she laughed. “Any parent with three active kids knows it’s next to impossible.”

This is absolutely normal for a White Daddy and a Black Momma! It all has to do with genetics!
Blonde hair and blue eyes are recessive genes! Somewhere in the Mother’s gene ancestry there was a relative that had blonde hair and blue eyes! Daddy also has those genes, so when you have two recessive genes that come together, it produces a positive outcome — a child with blonde hair and blue eyes!
We had friends, a Caucasian Mama and a Black Daddy that produced two beautiful blonde haired and blue eyed daughters! They found out that Daddy had a couple Caucasian ancestors and Mama already was naturally blonde hair and blue eyes, so that’s where the recessive genes came from that came together in their little girls!
I am so sorry that there are ignorant people out there that are accusing and nasty to Alex just because she was a Black Mama who had a blonde haired, blue eyed daughter! That is shameful and disgustingly evil to do to any mother! Shame on them! Better to say nothing when they know nothing about genetics!
